Rowan's attempt to escape Lasher and his pursuit of her and their child are at the heart of this extraordinary saga. It is a novel that moves around the globe, backward and forward through time, and between the human and demonic worlds. Its many voices - of women, of men, of demons and angels, present and past - haunt and enchant us. With a dreamlike power, the novel draws us through twilight paths, telling a chillingly hypnotic story of occult and spiritual aspirations and passion.

In the days before the Civil War, there lived in New Orleans the gens de couleur libre - copper-skinned half-castes, liberated by their "owners," but confined by their color to a life of political non-existence and social subordination. Here is a compelling and richly textured tale of a people forever caught in the shadows between black and white.

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Publisher's Summary
The novel opens in present day Paris in a crowded café, where David meets Pandora. She is 2,000 years old, a child of the millennia, the first vampire ever made by the great Marius. David persuades her to tell the story of her life through the ages.
Pandora carries you back to her mortal girlhood in the world of Caesar Augustus, where she meets and falls in love with the handsome, charismatic, lighthearted, still-mortal Marius. She is forced to flee in fear of assassination by conspirators plotting to take over the city. You then follow her to the exotic port of Antioch, where she is destined to be reunited with Marius, now immortal and haunted by his vampire nature, who will bestow on her the Dark Gift as they set out on the fraught and fantastic adventure of their two turbulent centuries together.
Pandora is Volume 1 of The New Tales of the Vampires.

poor production value
It might be a good book but I cant get past the poor sound quality. There is a hissing sound in the back ground every time the narrator speaks.
I also have the abridged version and there is no such issue with the sound quality but the abridgment cuts out too many details that make Anne Rice books so enjoyable.

Pandora My Goddess!
Where does Pandora rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In my top 20
What was one of the most memorable moments of Pandora?
When she was out smarting her evil brother who sold out her family to the praetorian guard.
Have you listened to any of Kate Reading’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It wasn't one particular scene between Pandora and her father, but what woman isn't moved by a girl who loves and is deeply loved by a wonderful father. The "wedding night" of Pandora and Marius, and who couldn't adore Flavius... I mean he was kind of her Gay Boyfriend...
Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful who's who in the Vampire world of Anne Rice! I DREAM that she'd go back to it!
ANNE GIVE UP THE WOLF AND GO BACK TO THE VAMPIRE.... Plus I'd really like to find out what happened to Louis!

A wonderful Tale
This is a wonderful tale that brings you through the 'life' of Pandora. Anne Rice has given us a series of tales from Pandora's life that is written with insight, drama, and emotion. It fills in some more history of the Vampires that continually brings her world depth and interest.
The Reader was exceptional. So pleasant to listen to. She added life and spirit to this tale of the 'undead'.
I was sorry that her story had to end so...on to Armand.
I Loved It!

I'm a huge Anne Rice fan!
Would you listen to Pandora again? Why?
Yes, I absolutely will in a few years because it's such a great story. You'll never get bored!
What did you like best about this story?
Pandora, the main character. I liked hearing about her life in Roman times before she became a vampire.
Have you listened to any of Kate Reading’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When she left Marius. This is a great companion book to "Blood and Gold" which is Marius' life story. That way you can understand both of the character's perspectives.
Any additional comments?
I loved the book.

I have always loved Anne Rice, but could never get through here heavy details. Kate Reading did such an awesome job of capturing Pandora's attitude, and personality, the few times i did feel bogged down with detail, Kate, used Pandora's attitude to bring excitement to it.

The story didn't add to the overall vampire mythology as I had hoped. It was shorter than most of her previous vampire books. I liked the setting and the attempt to tie history together in the end.

Pandora The eternal beauty
being a fan of the original Vampire chronicles I picked up Pandora. which begins the new vampire Tales. David Talbot Once Lestat's Mortal friend, now fledgling Vampire thanks to the events of "Tales Of The Body Thief". David takes it upon his self to chronicle their lives. Finding Pandora In Modern day Paris David asks her her Tale.
Pandora amused and curious by David's request agrees and we are drawn into a tale of a young Pandora in ancient Rome where Pandora a young senators daughter who encounters the still mortal legendary Marius and we are drawn into a tale of Betrayal Loss and Love as Pandora eventually falls into life of the vampire. The Narrator does an excellent job of showing Pandora's changing emotions as she goes through her trials and tribulations as she has to adapt to the changing environment around her and within herself. Pandora eventually evolves from an headstrong girl to strong of will intellegent woman. and excellent choice.
