First of all, I really loved the narrator. Never heard Jackson Baker's voice before, but he sounds like someone I'd love to go out hiking and foraging with:)
Now for the book itself: This is a part of my research on eating clean paleo. This lifestyle has pushed me into exploring wild caught meats and fish. But recently, it came to mind that if I'm gonna ask the men in my family to go hunt and fish for me, I can supplement our new natural diet with "whiled caught" plants as well. While I'm not interested in going out hunting for food, I'm most definitely willing to forage for my berries and herbs. I'm interested in all edible berries, as they are paleo-friendly, as well as greens that I can use fresh in my salads and soups/stews. This is really exciting for me! After I listened to this book, a very real, practical plan has formed and I think I'm gonna be venturing out in the wild within the next couple of weeks. I just need to do a bit more research on what's in season. With a solid guide on how to recognize poisonous plants, I have much more confidence that I can do this.
A nice surprise was a chapter on preservation and preparation. I was mostly thinking about recognizing and harvesting the plants that I want, but now that I've listened to the book, I realized that there is a bit more to my foraging project than what I thought:) And this book has what I'm gonna need to prepare for it.
I have to say that everything in this book is fantastic information, well thought out and researched. However, I was hoping for information about mushrooms. Actually, that was my main interest when I picked up this book, so I'm a bit disappointed. I really hope that Paul Macy follows up this great guide with one on mushrooms, becasue I'm gonna be the first to get it.
The bottom line - your teas, your kitchen and even your medicine cabinet could be freshly stocked with the help of this foraging guide. If you are not specifically looking for mushrooms, I highly recommend this book!
