I’m half-witch, half-faery, and facing dangers as real as the ache in my bad knee. Ibuprofen and caffeine keep me going, and I could do this for the rest of my life. Whoever thinks my family home is an easy mark better take notice: The new Guardian in town isn’t going down without a fight. Story
After finding my soon-to-be ex-husband together with my soon-to-be ex-assistant, I realize his "for better or for worse" didn't include my 40s. An extended vacation on a remote Italian island sounds like the perfect antidote to a midlife crisis - until I arrive. I'm expecting Chianti and pasta. What I get is a run-down bed-and-breakfast with the oldest Nonna in existence. There's something about this island. Something odd. Like how everyone keeps calling me Mamma or how I'm the first tourist in decades.

I knew hot flashes were supposed to be hot, but I didn't expect flames. One day I'm in anger management, normalizing the cordial hate between me and my husband. The next, we're divorced, and he has taken both our house and the business we built together. I'm 40 years old and living above our empty restaurant, plotting my next move. And then the world around starts lighting up - literally catching on fire. I'm starting to think my defining characteristic may not be my snark or my cupcake-baking prowess, but spontaneous combustion.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

After dating a string of losers and banishing a poltergeist, I packed up my Los Angeles life and my 11-year-old son, and moved...to a town in Oregon with a population of 680. Well, 682 now. Culture shock anyone? Ahem, never mind that.... New starts can happen anywhere, right? I hope so, because I need to start the next chapter of my 43-year life pronto. So, why Haven Hollow? For one reason - there aren’t any witches here. And a witch can make a gypsy’s life...complicated. Oh, right, I’ve put the cart before the horse.

The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

fun, but...
I've only recently discovered the Paranormal Women's Fiction genre, and as a 43yo woman, I'm really enjoying heroines my own age going on paranormal adventures. However, I am discovering that the tropes run strong in the genre as a whole. The books seem to be more similar than different, regardless of the author. Of those I've read, they all seem to start with a dissolved marriage and broke, despondent, sexually dissatisfied heroines, who all seem to be fairly similar in personality. Hell, I've just read two in a row where she drove a VW Bug.
I don't think it's so much that anyone is copying anyone else, but rather that those entering into the new genre step into an arena in which they feel there are very strong expectations from readers. No one yet seems to be brave enough to venture farther from the established and accepted characteristics. (I'm hoping this phase passes soon.)
I could have said all that on any of the reviews I've written for PWF books so far. But, as a reader, I had to get far enough into the genre to recognize the repetitions. And I can't disparage any one book for it and not the others. But I also can't ignore that these book are starting to feel very formulaic, including Over the Faery Hill (though I do think Hart tried to be a little different by including a trans ex instead of an evil or cheating ex.)
Having said all that, I have found that some authors do better with the middle-aged heroine than others. Hart's wasn't the best. I liked Joey, but she didn't feel 40+ at all. This is also the second PWF book in a row that I've read where the heroine being middle-aged felt like window dressing slapped on so that the book could fit in the PWF genre.
Joey spent the whole book trying to correct a mistake made her freshman year of high school. I'm sorry, but I don't care if she's over-weight, 40+ years old, and complains about saggy boobs. If an author gives me a heroine whose most important life events happened at 15 and reads as if she hasn't had a further 25 years of life, I'm going to say she doesn't actually feel middle-aged. Especially if she also doesn't have any of the markers of middle life—no children, no career, no established hobbies, no favorite isle in the grocery store, whatever. If she still (or again) lives with her parents, in a life centered around her mom, dad, and grandma, and is more concerned with what happened at 15 years-old than 35, she can't possibly really feel middle-aged. She feels mid-twenties, maybe. And thus, while the book might be a fine paranormal adventure, it's not much of a Paranormal Women's Fiction book.
But, as I said, I did like Joey. I enjoyed her snark and her love for her family. I liked Robin too, thought I can't say I felt the romance develop in any true fashion. All in all, I'd be happy to read more of Hart's book.
Note: I received a free audible code for this book. I chose to listen and review it.

I loved this story so much!!!
I loved this story so much because it had so many layers!
Joey thought then when her Olympic dream ended so did her life so she never accomplished anything. Thinking that was the catalyst she would do anything to alter the moment that changed her life forever.
When that chance comes around she jumps on it and the misadventure that unfolds teaches her that things happen for a reason and change is up to you!
This is the story of how Joey gets her groove back and I loved it!

One Moment In Time
Jennifer L Hart's new series is funny, light, and whimsical. The book centers around Joey Whitmore, who thinks that if she could go back in time and alter one decision her whole life would be different. When she is offered the chance, she is tempted to try. Although the situation is something that is impossible, who hasn't wished that they could change a past decision? Jennifer Hart excels in creating characters who are amusing, warm and relatable. I enjoyed this book and I recommend it to others, with the admonishment that there are a couple of times that sensual words are used. Jacqueline Rendell's narration is good as she provides different voices for the characters. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Awesome
What a truly enjoyable listen. I wasn’t really sure on what I was expecting from this book but I certainly got a better listen than I was expecting. It was a wonderful different take on I guess you could say fairies but centred around Robin Goodfellow and Joey a middle aged lady have a guess a bit of a midlife crisis. And about a bargain the two of them made. But that’s all I’m telling you. I can say yes give this book a go you’ll be pleasantly surprised

Fae prince, magic, and time travelling chaos!
Ever daydream about what might have been? Think about how your life could be better if ___ did/didn't happen? Well, that's what you find when Joey, a 40ish woman thinking she's a "loser", with the luck of Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum (complete with life guidelines from a "grandma Mazur") meets sexy, mysterious, flirty faery prince, Robin.
The chaotic time-traveling situations orchestrated by Robin made me giggle, groan, and ache for misguided Joey, who has to decide if what she always wanted, truly brings the happiness and acclaim she longs for.
I found this to be a great listen, and I'm looking forward to book 2, because... that hook!😯
I received an ALC from author, promotor, or publisher, and chose to leave an honest review.

Fun and Entertaining But Also Meaningful
This book was not only fun and entertaining but surprisingly meaningful. The strong message in this book was presented in a powerful but light-handed manner. This is a good book for anyone who has mulled over what one would do if one coujld go back in time to change the course of one's life for the better, to fix bad choices or to make smarter decisions. While this has echos of It's a Wonderful Life, it does not feel at all cliched.

What if ...?
Everyone has been faced with the question "what if...?" In this gorgeous fantasy book, Jennifer L. Hart gets to the heart of the matter. The story is not only convincing through its humour and fantasy, but also shows an unexpected depth of self-criticism and self-acceptance. With her charming writing style, the author quickly drew me into the story.
Joey Whitmore knows the day that changed her life. When the charismatic fae prince Robin offers her a chance to change her past, the temptation is great - but everything has it's price.
The tension was build-up very fast and I was very curious which decisions Joey will make and what effects they'll have.
Even if the romance is less important, the reader finds a great tension between Robin and Joey. Personally, I liked the interpersonal relationships a lot - friendships and enmities or family ties - Jennifer L. Hart has succeeded in building a realistic picture. I loved the little wisdoms at the beginning of every chapter.
Overall, a very well written book that made me laugh and made think about my own past - I can't wait for the sequel.
"The Fae Side of Forty" is the second part of this series and has already been published. I hope the audio book will follow soon.
The narrator Jacqueline Rendell is an excellent cast. Her interpretation of the individual characters is very successful.

Whats not to Love about this book
'Over The Faery Hill' Book 1 of the Magical Midlife Misadventures
Author Jennifer L. Hart
Narrator Jacqueline Rendell
Length 8 hours 3 mins
Jennifer thank you for giving me the opportunity to listen to and review your brilliant and funny book, I loved it and was so hooked I finished it in just 1 day.
This is the first book in Jennifer L, Hart's new series, Magical Midlife Adventure's, and what a great start. I love her style of writing Jennifer has created a realistic story full of fantasy, magic, romance and laugh out loud humour. I also must add Jacquelline Rendell has done an amazing job, of narrating the book and bringing the characters to life, her voice is clear, pleasant and to listen to.
Joey Whitmore is a rather unlucky 42 year old, whose life has slowly fallen apart after an accident during her childhood. Joey meets a rather charming but naughty mischievous and slightly sly fairy prince that gives her the opportunity to go back in time and try and change her future, and that is where the fun, adventure, magic and laugh's begin.
Will Joey be successful on her journey and end up with everything she wants, will it be a happy future and make her happy ? or has she opened a can of worms and made things worse? Well I am not going to spoil the story for you, by telling you if she has a happy ever after ending you will have to read/listen to the book to find out. However I will give you a hint that that there is a great twist at the end, which will leave you wanting more and to move straight on to the next book
The next book in the series is called the Fae Side Of Forty, it was released on 24/02/21. I am looking forward to listening to it when it becomes available on Audible. I can not wait to see what is next in store for Joey and the other characters in this magical story.

Narration could be better
The story is fine, but the narrator should learn that if they can't manage a Welsh accent, they should default to no accent rather than maintaining a cringeworthy attempt at the deformed lovechild of bad Irish and bad Scottish accent.... {SHUDDER!}
It really detracts from he listenability of the audiobook.

A delightful story of what might have been
Joey Whitmore lives a cursed life. At least that's what she'd have you believe. But when she's given the chance to turn back time, things don't go exactly like she thinks they will. Along the way she discovers someone she's lost, herself. Over the Faery Hill is a delightful story.

Great story
Joey is facing a midlife crisis and everything in her life is going wrong then a Fae turns up and he gives her the chance to change history . Liked this story it had me laughing in parts and the characters were great. Although I didn’t dislike the narrator she really should have researched the Welsh accent has the one she used was definitely not Welsh , at times she sounded Irish and others times Scottish 😬
