Publisher's Summary

San Francisco, 1906: Fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong is determined to break from the poverty in Chinatown, and an education at St. Clare's School for Girls is her best hope. Although St. Clare's is off-limits to all but the wealthiest white girls, Mercy gains admittance through a mix of cunning and a little bribery, only to discover that getting in was the easiest part. Not to be undone by a bunch of spoiled heiresses, Mercy stands strong - until disaster strikes.

On April 18 an historic earthquake rocks San Francisco, destroying Mercy's home and school. With martial law in effect, she is forced to wait with her classmates for their families in a temporary park encampment. Mercy can't sit by while they wait for the army to bring help. Fires might rage, and the city may be in shambles, yet Mercy still has the "bossy" cheeks that mark her as someone who gets things done. But what can one teenage girl do to heal so many suffering in her broken city?

Fantastic historical adventure

Loved this story, about a Chinese girl in 1906 San Francisco who impersonates an heiress to get into an all white school, but then the historic SF earthquake hits, shaking up all her plans. Mercy Wong is fierce, lovable, hilarious, someone to root for, and cry with. If you enjoy stories with strong female friendships, listen to this one. The narrator does an excellent job; love her accents, pacing and voice acting. A perfect read.

Great Listen

Fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong is a girl living in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1906. Mercy is a
strong-willed girl who does not let other’s discrimination against her, or her family bring her
down, and she strategizes her way into one of the most prestigious schools in town: St. Clare’s
School for Girls. After planning her way in so that she could make her own business and give her
family a good life, the great earthquake of 1906 hits. Mercy must pull everyone together with her
strong will and resourceful mind. The narrator for this audiobook was Emily Woo Zeller,
and as usual, she did a splendid job in delivering a convincing performance. The reader will find
themselves rooting for Mercy as she first navigates man made hazards of discrimination and
ignorance and then conquers the devastation made by Mother Nature. I also enjoyed how
Mercy’s love interest chooses to follow his dreams rather than to fall in love, which is a
fascinating difference to most teen novels. I believe that this novel is suitable for audiences 13 and
older and is imperative to include for teen readers to learn of a devastating time in America’s
history.
