Publisher's Summary

A satiric masterpiece about the allure and peril of money, "Our Mutual Friend" revolves around the inheritance of a dust-heap where the rich throw their trash. When the body of John Harmon, the dust-heap's expected heir, is found in the Thames, fortunes change hands surprisingly, raising to new heights "Noddy" Boffin, a low-born but kindly clerk who becomes "the Golden Dustman." Charles Dickens's last complete novel, "Our Mutual Friend" encompasses the great themes of his earlier works: the pretensions of the nouveaux riches, the ingenuousness of the aspiring poor, and the unfailing power of wealth to corrupt all who crave it. With its flavorful cast of characters and numerous subplots, "Our Mutual Friend" is one of Dickens's most complex - and satisfying - novels

Dickens meets Agatha Christie

Dickens does have the richest characters. I find them talking to me as I fall asleep or go about my day. My thoughts take on his cadence. He has been a lifelong favorite.
This is a tough story to follow, though. Partly because it gets very dark and fraught, partly because of all the threads woven together, the significant meetings, the hints at other stories.
At one point, the main, and the slipperiest character, John, goes into a very long and involved self-examination, to which we are intimate witness. I found this awkward. I suspect Dickens just ran out of energy to work it with his usual skill.
The reading was perfect though. Lovely vocal characterizations keep the story vibrant.

I love Dickens

Our Mutual Friend is a very long, and sort of twisted story with lots of characters.
It's a fun story to lusten to. Narrator does an excellent job with character voices.

(Just an FYI: s headng is NOT "Optional")

For me, there"s a point where, in almost all novels by Dickens, you just want to be DONE with the story, (Unless the story is "A Christmas Carol" and then all bets are off!) and _ YET _you ALSO want to know how the story ENDS,

THIS IS ONE OF THE LATTER,

Don't start something you cannot or will not complete, or rather, THINK you cannot complete, (And that time WILL come.) You'll be HAUNTED until you pick up where you left off! And it's a GOOD thing, a delicious thing, a necessary thing! It is a blessing AND a curse--and you will be forever grateful that it IS!

Thought-provoking if Drawn Out

I was unaware of this story before finding it here in Audible. As it was written in over 70 installments, it is about 68 chapters! They are entertaining enough and satisfying enough with Dickens' usual revelations of social injustice of the antebellum era. He is as preachy and sarcastic as I have ever experienced which makes me wonder what got on his last nerve, leading to its creation.
