Our Mothers' War is an eye-opening and moving portrait of women during World War II, a war that forever transformed the way women participate in American society. Never before has the vast range of women's experiences during this pivotal era been brought together in one book.

Now, Our Mothers' War re-creates what American women from all walks of life were doing and thinking, on the home front and abroad. These heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking accounts of the women we have known as mothers, aunts, and grandmothers reveal facets of their lives that have usually remained unmentioned and unappreciated.

Our Mothers' War gives center stage to one of WWII's most essential fighting forces: the women of America, whose extraordinary bravery, strength, and humanity shine through in ever minute.

Like perhaps a lot of people, I’ve been troubled by recent events in the United States. This book provides valuable perspective that helped contextualize these events historically. It really is an effective and enjoyable blend of first person accounts and contextual hindsight that covers an enormous amount of ground for its length. I was recommended the book by a female WWII historical interpreter after discussing my grandpa’s involvement in the war and subsequent memoir, and I am so glad I read it. Though not all readers may feel the same, I can truly say it made me not feel so alone and to understand more richly the life my grandpa led before I was born.

Great perspective

The extent of detail especially the use of personal interviews and diaries of women included that era uncovers the breadth and depths of those experiences. For the history buff who enjoys the personal accounts it can’t be beat.

Wide reaching, close up on women during WW2

This is an amazing book. I knew some of the things women did in WWII but I didn’t know the half of it. If you are interested in WWII this book is awesome. Absolutely loved it.
