Publisher's summary

Who was the mysterious girl that danced with the Angevin Crown Prince at the Buda Castle ball, then dashed off leaving behind nothing but a high-heeled shoe?

Down the mean streets of Eighteenth-Century Budapest walks Ferenc Marlowe, failed revolutionary and pioneer private detective. Hired by the Prince to find the missing girl, Marlowe finds himself caught up in a tangled web of court intrigue, dynastic conspiracies and low morals in high places. There are others in the city just as keen that the girl is never found, and Marlowe soon learns that a fairy-tale romance may not always have a happy ending.

Set in an alternative-history Hungary full of religious ferment, political oppression and pre-industrial grime, One Shoe Tale breaks new ground in mashing up hard-boiled detective noire, fairy-tale pastiche, uchronic fiction and just a bit of kinky sex.

good

Intrigue betrayals backstabbing around every corner. It was like watching a chess game being played out by human pawns. Ruthless. Good ending. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life

Different side of a fairy tale

This is a unique view of a popular fairytale. A detective story of who fits the shoe. I enjoyed this view, however toward the end it got a little confusing for me and seemed to stray a bit. Narration was great.

Fun Film Noir Fairytale Remix

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.

This quick story uses the characters of Cinderella mixed into a PI mystery. It starts after the ball - the Primce has found the shoe Cinderella left behind and wants to find her but does not know where to look - so he hires a PI - Marlowe [think Humphrey Bogart] - to locate her.

Overall, this was a fun mix. It is completely told from the perspective of the PI and his investigation, which provides some humorous asides. It is well written but definitely a much darker tale than Disney's Cinderella. The reformulating of some of the characters in the fairytale was clever. Warning: there is a BDSM scene. I hope to see Marlowe again - investigating more fairytale characters and his musings on their lifestyles.

The narrator was great and a perfect fit for this tale.

Unusual and Very Entertaining

A very unusual twisted take on the classic Cinderella story. A film noir detective is hired by Prince Charming to find the owner of the shoe that was left behind. The unexpected characters, along with the many accents the narrator employs, really make this special. I truly admire the imagination of the author!
