Story
In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

Many people have wondered why I've been speaking out on controversial issues for the last few years. They say I've never held political office. I'm not a constitutional scholar. I'm not even a lawyer. All I can say to that is "guilty as charged." It's true that I've never voted for a budget America could not afford. I've never raised anyone's taxes. And I've never promised a lobbyist anything in exchange for a donation. Luckily none of that really matters.

Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

From Las Vegas casinos, where Mike won and lost fortunes as a professional gambler, to a jail-cell beatdown. From failed rehabs to his 20-year marriage, an ideal union decimated by addiction. And finally, to the redemption of the most shameful moment of his life.

From Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States to the New York Times' 1619 project, the modern Left views American history through the lens of competing oppressions, replacing the traditional understanding that all Americans are part of a shared journey toward the perfection of universal ideals. Their attacks on the values that built our nation, from the rights to free speech and self-defense to the importance of marriage and faith communities, are insidious because they replace each of them with nothing beyond an increased reliance on the government.

Publisher's Summary
Dear Listener,
In February 2013 I gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Standing a few feet from President Obama, I warned my fellow citizens of the dangers facing our country and called for a return to the principles that made America great.
Many Americans heard and responded, but our nation’s decline has continued. Today the danger is greater than ever before, and I have never shared a more urgent message than I do now. Our growing debt and deteriorating morals have driven us far from the founders' intent. We've made very little progress in basic education. Obamacare threatens our health, liberty, and financial future. Media elitism and political correctness are out of control. Worst of all, we seem to have lost our ability to discuss important issues calmly and respectfully regardless of party affiliation or other differences. As a doctor rather than a politician, I care about what works, not whether someone has an (R) or a (D) after his or her name. We have to come together to solve our problems. Knowing that the future of my grandchildren is in jeopardy because of reckless spending, godless government, and mean-spirited attempts to silence critics left me no choice but to write this book. I have endeavored to propose a road out of our decline, appealing to every American’s decency and common sense. If each of us sits back and expects someone else to take action, it will soon be too late. But with your help, I firmly believe that America may once again be "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Sincerely, Ben Carson

Please lead our nation from the brink of...
Like most, I had not previously heard of Dr. Carson (despite his previous media fame) until the National Prayer Breakfast. This book is an answer to all of the questions that immediately sprung the following morning e.g., who is Ben Carson, why was he asked to speak, did he just challenge POTUS, what are his politics.
He answers all of these and more. Specifically the charge that he 'embarrassed' POTUS and needed to apologize. Also he addresses his mea culpa following the fallout of his 'lumping together homosexuality and bestiality', which was feigning ignorance to the sensitivity of the LGBT community with bestiality.
Most importantly, being a good doctor, he prescribes practices that will help alleviate the symptoms and, hopefully, the disease(s) plaguing this country, after every chapter.
I gave only 4 stars to the narrator's performance, but only because I had the expectation that the author would be reading. Prentice Onayemi's voice was actually powerful, yet comforting and I enjoyed it immensely.
Each chapter opens with scripture, mostly proverbs. So if you're offended by a belief in God or by His written word, you'll probably not like anything Dr. Carson says. However, even atheists will find comfort in his wisdom as he calls out extremists on both ends of the ideological spectrum. He calls for civility and perspective throughout the book and simply asks his readers to remember that we're children of God first and foremost.

Dr. Ben Carson says it like it is
Would you consider the audio edition of One Nation to be better than the print version?
Anyone who has heard or read anything from Dr. Ben Carson will thoroughly enjoy this book. It says a lot for who this man is and shows how much he can offer this country if he were President.
I HIGHLY recommend this excellent book. About all I can add is that it would be even better is Dr. Carson read it himself.
What did you like best about this story?
He never hesitates to give both sides or an issue and explains why he chose his own preferences.
What does Prentice Onayemi bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I am a great fan of audio books. I like Prentice's voice and he adds good inflections rather than just straight reading of the book. He has a very calming voice, similar to Dr. Carson.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but unfortunately there are other demands on my time, so I had to listen in sections. I love listening to it when I am driving.
Any additional comments?
It is terrific that the audio book version so quickly after the release of the hardbound version.

A refreshing listen
Where does One Nation rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Dr. Ben Carson offers a new look at what it means to be raised in a tough minority culture. He had a great mother who cared deeply for the success of her children and went to all lengths to ensure they had the right upbringing for a sound adulthood. Ben Carson weighs in on his life, his goals and his position in today's world.
His beliefs stand in direct contrast to the views and direction of our first black president who squandered a life of privilege and cultivates divisiveness on every level.
What was one of the most memorable moments of One Nation?
I was profoundly touched by the love and admiration Ben has for his family, starting with his mother and brother and continuing through his married life.
What does Prentice Onayemi bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He has a smooth tone, and I can hear the words spoken with affection for the writer.

Dr. Carson's Convictions are Contagious.
Where does One Nation rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It will stay in the top five for a while. It is a short read, perfect for a one time trip or background to a home DIY project. Dr. Carson gives insight to his beliefs, politically and morally in a well organized fashion that is easy to listen to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of One Nation?
Dr. Carson gives much credit to his success to his tenacious mother who made no excuses for herself and did not expect the children she raised to make any for themselves either.
Which scene was your favorite?
I am such a fan of his recent National Prayer Breakfast Speech. This was a perfect way to open the book.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
This book really challenged me to look back at documents and biographies of our founding fathers. Not only do I appreciate their sacrifice, but also yearn to truly know the vision and plan they had for our country. Are we, the people, satisfying their vision?
Any additional comments?
I highly recommend this easy, quick read to readers that desire a solution to the many issues that face our country. Also, this is an excellent overview into understanding the motivations and person that Dr. Carson is, as a political leader, or role model.
