Publisher's summary

Dr. Perkins’ final manifesto on race, faith, and reconciliation.

We are living in historic times. Not since the Civil Rights Movement of the '60s has our country been as vigorously engaged in the reconciliation conversation. There is a great opportunity right now for culture to change, to be a more perfect union. However, it cannot be done without the church, because the faith of the people is more powerful than any law government can enact.

The church is the heart and moral compass of a nation. To turn a country away from God, you must sideline the church. To turn a nation to God, the church must turn first. Racism won't end in America until the church is reconciled first and then, and only then, it can spiritually and morally lead the way.

In this, his crowning work, Dr. Perkins speaks honestly to the church about the things he’s discovered to be crucial about reconciliation, discipleship, and justice...the principles vital to a complete ministry of reconciliation.

He offers a call to repentance to both the white church and the black church. He explains how band-aid approaches of the past won't do. And while applauding these starter efforts, he holds that true reconciliation won't happen until we get more intentional and relational. True friendships must happen, and on every level. This will take the whole church, not just the pastors and staff.

The racial reconciliation of our churches and nation won't be done with big campaigns or through mass media. It will come one loving, sacrificial relationship at a time. The Gospel and all that it encompasses has always traveled best relationally. We have much to learn from each other and each have unique poverties that can only be filled by one another. The way forward is to become "wounded healers" who bandage each other up as we discover what the family of God really looks like. Real relationships, sacrificial love between actual people, is the way forward. Nothing less will do.

John Perkins is inspiring.

I loved this book. It is timely considering what is happening in America today. His hopeful attitude is contagious when it is tempting to give up. Seeking racial reconciliation is not easy, it takes perseverance and he is a great example of staying the course.

Words from a wise man

I read this book al the way through in one setting because I didn’t want to stop. My grandfather was a very wise man that loved God. He didn’t have a lot of money, but he was wealthy in other ways. Reading this book was like having a long conversation with grandpa about what it vitally important in life — about race and love. Thank you, John Perkins, for sharing this with us. We are one blood.

Life changing message for life growth!

I have never been so intent on finishing an audiobook in a day! The message of reconciliation is one woven deep into to hearts of black peoples in America historically even after systematic oppression and years of racial tension, prejudice and social vulnerability. I have been deeply riveted by Mr. Perkins’ own experiences of racial prejudice and losing family based on racial biases of those around him. Yet, he emerged as one of the greatest theological minds people in our time have been blessed to experience. This message needs to shouted from the rooftops from underprivileged neighborhoods to the rooftops of the White House. The narrator’s deep and soul stirring voice kept me on the edge of seat waiting to hear what was next. Excellent performance, bar none!

Let's Examine Our Hearts

This is an excellent book. It definitely is an opening for so many people to examine their hearts and find their own tensions and hatreds towards ethnicities other than their own. John Perkins how he learned to love the way God loves. With God's help there is nothing impossible. With self-examination we truly can be One Blood.

Great place to begin the conversation on ethnic reconciliation.

Dr Perkins beautifully amplifies what scripture says is the calling on the lives of each believer, “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” (2 Cor 5:18-19) Let’s fill our mouths with the message of reconciliation and be about the ministry of reconciliation and in doing so, we hasten the Lord’s return.
