Story
The peaceful life of a village in Wiltshire is suddenly shattered by a disaster which strikes without reason or explanation, leaving behind it a trail of misery and horror. A yawning, bottomless crack spreads through the earth, out of which creeps a fog that resembles no other. Whatever it is, it must be controlled; for wherever it goes it leaves behind a trail of disaster as hideous as the tragedy that marked its entry into the world. The fog, quite simple, drives people insane.

Story
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Publisher's Summary
Upon a time. Remember the faery stories you were told as a child? Tales of tiny, magical, winged beings and elves, wicked witches and goblins. Demons... What if one day you found they were true? What if, when you became an adult, you discovered they were all based on fact? What if you met the fantasy and it was all so very real? That's what happened to Thom Kindred.
The wonders were revealed to him - but so were the horrors; for not far behind the Good, there always lurks the Bad. And the Bad had designs on Thom. The Bad would show him real evil. He would see the 'hellhagges' and the demons. He would be touched by perverted passion. And corruption. And he would encounter his own worst nightmare. The Bad would seek to destroy him. And only the magic of the little beings would be able to help him.
James Herbert was one of Britain’s greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages.
Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. Awesome twist on our existence
Let me start by saying, whoever said that this book has "too much sex" and "no storyline without all the sex" did not fully engross themselves into this book. Most of the sex actually played a key role in the story and what didn't was more character development then anything. At first I was expecting a fairytale rehashing Snow White and the like, but I was pleasantly surprised it was it's own story. Definitely a good read and the narrator was great too.

Adult Book-Adult Review: Once... And Only Once...
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
It is hard to imagine anyone truthfully enjoying this book. This is my first ever feedback/comment on an audiobook and I chose this specific one to warn other unsuspecting readers.
I received this book as a gift nearly a decade ago but never got around to reading it. I would start, stop, and start again for a reason that I could never remember. Stubbornly determined, I finally finished this future-kindling after a three-day trudging through it's mire.
If you like unrealistically-motivated characters, horribly portrayed erotica, and suffer from masochism maybe this is for you! Still, I doubt it. *sigh* More follows...
What was most disappointing about James Herbert’s story?
In all honesty, the main character's stupid cowardice. I am seriously sick and tired of these winy 'heroes' saving the day by just simply being there! Then, complaining the whole time about this and that! Work, dammit, fight!
*SPOILER*
All Thom actually did in the end to "save the faeries/day" was open a flippin' book... I'll let that sink in... Open a flippin' book... Not grapple hand-to-hand with an ancient evil trying to destroy the world. Nope, a book that summoned faeries... Oh, that he did not even bring! His sidekick elf did all the blasted work!
"Oh, spiders!" ... Seriously, dude. Grow a set and at least pretend to be the butch, egotistical, master carpenter... Gah, this whole book infuriated me. None of the character's motivations made sense. The plot could be represented by a pillow perforated with a shotgun at really close range. Then, there's the long winded descriptions and useless information.
... Just... no... no.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Damian Lynch?
As if the writing was not bad enough, this guy decides to take long awkward pauses that could of taken out an hour of time if he would of just kept on reading! Then, the weird voices. Baaahh, a creepy attempt of a man trying to be a woman trying to be seductive... Baah, gross.
If I were to produce this audiobook, I would of hired two readers, one male and one female. A man mimicking a woman climaxing is just god-awful.
I gave the narrator two-stars instead of one because it is not his fault the book is so bad. A man has to make a living, I guess.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Once?
I would cut all the erotica. The writing made the main character seem clumsy. Come to think of it he was a stroke victim, so maybe it was intended? I think it is more a reflection on the author than something intentional. The repetition of the words "penis" and "vagina" proved the author's lack of imagination.
Condense the book into half it's size and remove most of the first five chapters that basically set-up the story. I felt like they could have been condense into one, MAYBE two but definitely not five. Removed 90% of the words during action events. The over dramatization, as well as, the author's verbosity clogged the action sequences to a near dead stop each and every time. Keep the sentences short and concise to mirror the events. If any further explanation is necessary put it in as a reflection.
Any additional comments?
My final opinion, if someone told me this was written by a 12-year-old, prepubescent boy, I would believe it and think that this was an impressive work for such. I really expected more and I am thankful Audible has a return policy.

WTAF - Do yourself a favour and don't bother
Before I start on the book, the narration on this is just awful. How did this guy get a job? It's like he's reading an instruction manual. It's so unsuitable for a fiction story I am completely baffled, great job on this one Audible. That wound me up from the start before the book started to, which was after the first chapter or so, it didn't take long. I don't know how to sufficiently express how bad this book was and I am sad to have to say it, but feel it's my duty to try to save others from suffering through it. I have read many James Herberts and really enjoyed them. I can barely believe he wrote this tedious drivel. It's one of the worst books I've ever read. If it hadn't have cost £7.99 I would not have finished it. The story is just dull and uninspired, but worse is that this book is littered with atrocious unnecessarily long and embarrassing sex scenes using language that made me physically want to crumple up in cringing seizures. I don't even know what to compare it to. Harold Robbins / Henry Miller he is not (so you know I'm not setting the bar very high on comparisons). The sex scenes are unimaginative, with embarrassingly crass language, and super boring action that it seems like the author obviously thought were edgy and wild. I cannot fathom the point of them. They are not erotic or shocking, and the duration of them.... Jesus Christ! Not to mention the uncomfortable paedo moments (yes really). There is one decent scene in the book where the author seems to remember he is writing a horror story, involving spiders. This is the only part of the book which is remotely OK but not worth cringing through the rest of it for. Unless your bag is overly long descriptions about nipple sucking and moaning and juices and moistness haaaaaa seriously who uses these terms?!?! Truly truly awful. Please do yourself a favour and swerve this one.

Not the best performance but a great story
If you could sum up Once in three words, what would they be?
Pure brilliance
What was one of the most memorable moments of Once?
The ending was the beginning
Did Damian Lynch do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
he was ok. I've heard the Robert Powell version and preferred Robert's version - although it may be than I am just liking the one I heard first.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
its real even if you don't believe.
Any additional comments?
Fantastic story by Herbert. I've heard people saying they didn't rate it because of the Sex. To me while the sex is an integral part of the story it is not smutty , rather just a very important aspect of this form of ritual magic. To remove it would be like running a world war 2 story without Germany. The story has depth and flows brilliantly. There is a god bit of mystery and suspense and the bad guys are believable because of their own vulnerabilities. I also just love the concept James paints in the story which I have never really come across. I recall my first listening was like watching a 2d black and white film turn into 3D colour as the true story emerges. There are broad philosophical metaphors which Herbert seems to work around - for instance how close is what we perceive of the world against what the world really is if only we could see straight, and are bad people bad or just duped by badness etc. For me its a unique piece of art and for that I think it will always remain one of my favorite stories of my life.

I was really disappointed
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I love a good ghost/fantasy story and the last book I read by Herbert I thoroughly enjoyed :) But this was just sex...to the point that if you took the 'passion' out, there really wasn't much left! I only finished the read because the narrator had quality! The setting and characters were strong and enjoyable...it was a shame they were all blurred out by 'passion'!

Worst book in my collection
After listening to The Secret of Crickley Hall and enjoying it very much, I thought I'd try another of James Herbert's books. Possibly unfortunately I chose Once (I say possibly as I have no idea if other stories are more like Once or C H, I don't think I chance another try). To say it was the worst of the 40 odd audible books I've listened to is not an exaggeration, over described, awful story and perverse descriptions of sex that weren't necessary parts of the story. I carried on listening just hoping it would improve, the nearer I got to the end I just wanted it to end and didn't feel anything for the characters.

Once
Another brilliant story written by James Herbert. I found this one very spiritual and loved the way it was so full of fairies,, elves and even an evil witch. His books were always interesting. He is truly missed, gone from this planet, fat too soon.

Fifty Shades of Green
This was VERY different to his other books, like a porn director trying his hand at Hammer Horror. I found the sex scenes distracting, in the wrong way, and over done to the point of corniness. Maybe it seemed worse listening to rather than reading them but I couldn’t shake the feeling he’s ‘trying his hand’ at something different. Never the less, it is what it is, am and always a fan.
