St. Irenaeus, the bishop of Lyon, France, wrote Against Heresies in 180 AD. It is a collected work made up of five books, in which Irenaeus examines the many schools of Gnostic thought of his day, in addition to various heretical Christian sects. He contrasts these with the orthodoxy of Christianity. This version of the work contains the first three books, which, before the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Library, were the best surviving description of Gnosticism.

Nothing except the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a greater miracle or wonder in human history. Jesus of Nazareth was foretold in the Torah and the Prophets centuries before his appearance and he was proved to be real and not a pretender due to his death and Resurrection. The early church grappled with all of this intellectually. Many heresies were confronted, answered, and dismissed. Throughout the 2000 plus years of church history, many of the early church heresies have reappeared over and over again. Whether you are Catholic or Protestant the answers are from the Word of God.

Theology par excellence
Not only is this fresh translation and the performance superbly done, but the theology of St. Athanasius is desperately needed by all Christians, helping them to apply the lessons expounded by the saint in their lives personally and ecclesiastically.

The best book of apologetics I have read all year
This book answered most questions I’ve had about Jesus. It even brought up some new points about why he had to die on the cross as a human that I’ve never thought of before
