Publisher's summary

On the Border of a Dream is an eye-opening and uplifting memoir that tells the true story of a boy from rural Mexico who, at a young age, sets his mind to becoming a pioneering surgeon in the USA. The memoir follows Edgar Hernandez, first with his tight-knit family as an adolescent in Mexico and then as he journeys to the USA to pursue his dream.

In today's hotly contested political environment, this book is poignant and pertinent as it offers a different view of the immigration debate. This book is written through the eyes of an "innocent child", which is a group we forget about when we choose to close our borders. It's descriptive writing makes the listener feel the tension that young Edgar endured as a child being chased by La Migra while illegally in the US and mesmerizes the listener, keeping you engaged and eager to understand why at age 10 he went back to Mexico and returned to the US legally a second time at age 11, because even at a young age he wanted to become an American citizen the legal way.

The author captures the universal experience of every migrant, establishing to the listener that hope is not easily extinguishable and that with unrelenting perseverance one can overcome tremendous odds. On the Border of a Dream is a true testament to the goodness of humanity and the integrity of immigrants who seek lives in the USA, not simply to better themselves but to better the American communities that they join as well.

A true Treasure

This book, truly embodies the strength and fight to become an American citizen. I was so impressed by the courage and tenacity of not only Dr. Hernandez, but his whole family and community. I feel that we forget that there are so many wonderful people out there, and that we need them to help us capture our goals. Which also means we need to be that person to other people too, and look out for our whole community. Dr. Hernandez worked hard, and he has proven that reaching success means sharing that talent through service. It was a wonderful story, and I look forward to listening and learning from his other books.

An Inspiring Story of achieving the American Dream

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would and already have recommended this book to several friends. The story is an emotional and inspiring tale of a boy with an impossible dream....to one day live in the United States! It is an engrossing tale of the incredible determination and perseverance Dr. Hernandez endured to become a legal citizen of this country. It is a touching story of how his older brother took on a fatherhood role and put his own future on the line to get his little brother a chance at the American Dream. To hear this story of how a poor child in a country with limited opportunities fought hard and worked tirelessly to become a very well respected and successful surgeon, brings a sincere emotional response. This book should be required reading for high school and college kids who take the blessings of this country for granted.

What did you like best about this story?

There are so many wonderful, touching elements to this story from hearing Dr. Hernandez describe his initial experiences with food and culture we take for granted to the heartwarming elements of family dedication. Each individual will identify with some element of this story.

What does Edgar H Hernandez, M.D. bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

This is read by Dr. Hernandez himself, which creates a stronger connection between the book and the author. To hear the actual author who experienced these emotional highs and lows brings a whole new element that reading it alone cannot.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The American Dream is alive and well!

Any additional comments?

This is a feel good story of family, hard work, perseverance, dedication and making the most out of an opportunity.
