  • Bisonology (BUFFALO) Encore with various bisonologists
    Nov 19 2025

Bison bison! Not just something to holler into the sky, but also the scientific name for North America's majestic wild bovines. In this encore, we explore a beast that once roamed the plains in the tens of millions. What's up with their humps? On what occasion do they wear capes? What noises do they make? How many are out there? What are the best ways to help them? In this special episode, you get 4x the usual number of ologists as we talk to archeologist Dr. Ken Cannon, wildlife biologist Dr. Dan McNulty, Alie's cousin Boyd and his wife Lila Evans, of the Blackfeet Tribe, who are bison ranchers based in Northern Montana. Also, once and for all: is it buffalo or bison? And can Alie hug one?

What’s their proclivity for snatching hats? Is The Staircase owl theory plausible? Is it ok to hoot back at them? What do you mean one of their toes is reversible? This episode’s got the answers, plus info on owl migration, conservation, burrowing, disco dancing, and more.

  • Strigiformology (OWLS) Part 1 with R.J. Gutiérrez
    Nov 5 2025

OWLS. FINALLY. In no particular order: what’s up with their eyes, legs, hoots, feathers, silent flight, nests, folklore, necks, barfs, conservation status, and omens? Go take a walk or sit on a porch in the dusk and make friends with Rocky. Dr. R.J. “Rocky” Gutiérrez is a celebrated researcher, Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota, a legend in the owl world, and simply one of the loveliest ologists. He’ll take us on a trip next to a river, scrambling up some trees, over rocky terrain and through the forest to learn why owls are so magnetic. Yeah, I called owls the best bird. Not backing down.

I first ‘met’ Alie on Forever35 pod and my fav murder pod when they had her share her hometown murder - I gave it a try for the ADHD episode and stuck around! Finally a science pod I enjoy and listen to and the Smologies are really great for the family -a benefit that they’re shorter, hold the kids attention longer and we can generally listen to in one car ride.

The passion of the guests mixed with the enthusiasm of the host while neither takes themselves too seriouly is the perfect recipe for being entertained while learning new things and reaffirming beliefs in science and education.

Dad Von Podcast Ward a must have in your earhole

Having grown up in Florida, near Marineland in St. Augustine, I love dolphins and this episode touched my inner child's curiosity. Taking the deep dive into this subject brought back memories of summer camps at Marineland, watching the dolphins for hours and imagining their conversations. Marineland is no more and now the dolphin center is focused on education rather than entertainment. These wonderful creatures deserve our respect and yes, they will rule the future water world with Kevin Costner as their court jester!! Thanks for another great interview Alie!

Fascinating!

Oleee Dad Von, is in fact, the best. This is the first podcast I decided to try out, and oh boy it’s a winner! Alie is hilarious and also incredibly intelligent, despite her endearing modesty. Her enthusiasm about every topic is infectious! You will learn so many strange and wonderful things. If you love science and enjoy laughing, this podcast is for you.
