Publisher's summary

Number one best-selling authors Preston & Child bring the true story of the ill-fated Donner Party to new life in a thrilling blend of archaeology, history, murder and suspense.

Nora Kelly, a young curator at the Santa Fe Institute of Archaeology, is approached by historian Clive Benton with a once-in-a-lifetime proposal: to lead a team in search of the so-called "Lost Camp" of the tragic Donner Party.

This was a group of pioneers who earned a terrible place in American history when they became snow-bound in the California mountains in 1847, their fate unknown until the first skeletonized survivors stumbled out of the wilderness, raving about starvation, murder - and cannibalism.

Benton tells Kelly he has stumbled upon an amazing find: the long-sought diary of one of the victims, which has an enigmatic description of the Lost Camp. Nora agrees to lead an expedition to locate and excavate it - to reveal its long-buried secrets. Once in the mountains, however, they learn that discovering the camp is only they first step in a mounting journey of fear. For as they uncover old bones, they expose the real truth of what happened, one that is far more shocking and bizarre than mere cannibalism. And when those ancient horrors lead to present-day violence on a grand scale, rookie FBI agent Corrie Swanson is assigned the case...only to find that her first investigation might very well be her last.

Worth the wait

Great adventure in country I enjoy listening about. Wish the narrator had used a more familiar accent for Pendergast for us avid listeners.

Simply fantastic

This is every bit as good as all of the other Preston/Child books, it even features Pendergast in a late cameo role.

I grabbed this one as I could not resist catching up with Corrie Swanson, I loved 'Still Life With Crows' and I am so glad that I caught this one, Corrie and Nora, two great women from the Pendergast world, it's a winner, simple as that.

If you like Pendergast, you will like this ... Buy it, you will not regret it.

Don’t waste your money

I found this book incredibly boring. I kept having to go back over the story line as I could not remember what had happened. The plot is very weak. Do not waste your time with this book. I am really disappointed as I have loved the other books these authors have written. Hope he next one is better

Very good

I enjoyed this book, was great to see two great characters from the Pendergast series coming together without the great man himself. Although I did find it frustrating to wait for the realisation of the connection between them.

The story was really interesting and right up there with the grislyness (it's a word) of the Pendergast series.

I did not like the narrator, she had a very annoying voice at times and I didn't think the voices she did for Corrie or Nora were right, let alone what she tried to do with Pendergasts voice.

OK

The book was ok, but the characterisation wasn't great and it really needed ruthless editing.

Good book, not Preston's and Child's best novel

This could become a fun new series but oh dear me, please get a new narrator!

Like Preston & Child ..... but this time

Audible really need to read these third rate stories before sucking people in to purchase them. The synopsis looked great and I have read these authors previously and liked the books to varying degrees. The storyline for this book looked very interesting, however, it is truly formulaic and weak in every way. Nothing new at all, the plot line is fourth rate at best I was very, very disappointed and returned this non event book.

Pentergast

It was a bit of a shock to hear Pentergast,s voice in his cameo appearance at the end. Mmmmmm....A woman's voice? How dreadful...
