A
Sunday Times bestseller

The next book in Stephen Fry's acclaimed internationally bestselling Greek myths series telling the story of The Odyssey.

Sometimes the hardest journey is the way back home . . .

Wily Odysseus, King of Ithaca, has won Troy for the Greeks – after a decade of brutal, bloody warfare. But now this warrior remembers he is a husband and father – and his gaze turns longingly towards home.

Setting sail with a small fleet, Odysseus dreams of soon lying in the arms of his beloved wife Penelope, and of teaching his son Telemachus the ways of a warrior. However, the gods laugh at the foolish hopes of mortals. And, angered by this upstart, Poseidon – God of the ocean realms – curses our hero to wander the seas for ten long years.

Encountering one-eyed giants, six-headed monsters, terrible storms, titanic whirlpools, hypnotic sirens, seductive witches and jealous goddesses, Odysseus is tempted and tormented beyond any man’s endurance.

Yet he is no mere mortal – and the lure of his wife and son draws him, step by step, stroke by stroke, ever closer to home and his ultimate destiny . . .

A tale of love and longing, return and redemption, home and hope, Stephen Fry’s Odyssey sees the author and national treasure weave the final threads of the fabulous story begun in the worldwide bestseller, Mythos, into an astonishing and mesmerising tapestry for the ages.

'With his distinctive narration, Fry brings warmth, exuberance and humour to these age-old stories, along with a range of voices...' The Guardian

'Fry is at his story-telling best . . . the gods will be pleased' Times

'Brilliant . . . all hail Stephen Fry' Daily Mail

I loved every bit of this and recommend to all. Stephen Fry is simply the Best!

Stephen Fry's delivery and excitement about all he was telling us. Enjoyed all his alliteration too. Such fun.

I've just finished listening to Stephen Fry's Odyssey, and I'm both happy and sad. Happy because it was a wonderful experience and sad because it ended.

Brilliant

Stephen Fry retelling the Odyssey -- is there anything better? I listened to this in one go and can't wait to hear it again. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

Pure delight

Stephen Fry's work is more (or less) rewarding for its contemporary, creative twist than as a (re)telling of Homer. I skipped his Book 3 (Troy), listening instead to the Stevens/Fitzgerald Illiad (without regret). I admit that I found myself at numerous points in Odyssey asking myself, "Why am I listening to Fry's version?" Fry is a brilliant actor and narrator, as well as a clever writer and thinker. But after books 1, 2, and 4 of the series, it doesn't escape the listener that much of the delivery is just as much about the 21st-century author/narrator as about the creator(s) of the original myth. Not surprisingly, numerous listeners are captivated by such an approach (nearing bombast, but I offer Fry more respect than that).

This is to say that if you want to experience the Odyssey closer to its original form for yourself and allow yourself your own interpretation, then Fry's Odyssey might be better as a supplement than a mainstay. There is simply too much added/parenthetical content in Fry's version to allow you to focus on the core story. Even in his excellent characterization as narrator and helpful explanatory notes, I can't help but think that something of the epic tone is far lost in Fry's tongue-in-cheek presentation of protagonists, scenes, and asides (acknowledging that this is largely intentional on his part). So I greatly enjoyed this as a contemporary creative work of Fry's, somewhat less so in the essay commentary of the final segments (though still thought provoking), and even less from my desire to hear a "purer" rendering of the Homer tale. With this in mind, I would recommend this audiobook to Stephen Fry fans more for the Stephen Fry experience than for Homer's Odyssey itself (which I will listen to again elsewhere).

Enjoyable as a Long, Long, Creative Essay

Love every mythology book written and narrated by Stephan Fray. The Odyssay was never my favorite book but with Mr. Fray again a joy to listen to.

A wonderful telling of the Odyssey. Whatever I write here, I can't do it justice. It's just brilliant.
