Publisher's Summary

Evidence is the key to investment success.

Odds On: The Making of an Evidence-Based Investor isn't just another investment advice book. It's a memoir, a manifesto, and a guide to the way investing should be. Odds On describes author Matt Hall's role in an ongoing revolution in the investment world: the shift from a traditional sales-driven, active-management model to a model that draws on academic evidence to better serve the real interests of investors.

Matt's story begins with his first exposure to Wall Street, where he becomes disillusioned with the traditional investing model due to its inability to truly help clients. He stumbles into the emerging evidence-based investing world, and learns how to help investors reach their goals through methods that reflect the limits of our abilities to predict which investments will deliver the highest returns. Matt's unique approach to investing is built on a dual foundation of knowledge and purpose: knowledge gained through evidence-based strategies involving research, data, and logic, and purpose gained by personal reflection on what money and success truly mean. In Odds On, Matt's storytelling makes financial topics truly relevant and easy to understand, while his investment philosophy offers listeners a chance to move beyond decisions based on anxiety and confusion, and manage wealth in ways that lead to greater success and a richer life.

Reinforces the Efficient Market Theory

Great fast read. The first few chapters walk through Matt’s life and decisions. It is helpful to glimpse inside his mind because the doubts he held about traditional investment practices and banks likely touch a core with many. The first book I read about this topic was Winning the Loser’s Game in the late 90’s and I enjoyed this book just as much.

A personal memoir melted into a sales pitch

If you’re looking for investment advise you won’t find any here. This is a pitch for an investment advisory firm cleverly sown together with a personal memoir. To sum it up, Warren Buffett is lucky, the market is unpredictable, and you can only make money if you become a client.

An investment paradigm shift

Matt has a very smooth and reassuring way of explaining that, for most of us, what we’ve learned and been told about investing is fundamentally flawed.

An amazing book that will especially benefit those who are new to investing.

Any additional comments?

As a like-minded financial advisor, most of the investing/financial planning material was familiar to me. However, it was the author's personal story that brought this book to life and made it so inspirational. I identified with his story and it has encouraged me to never take any moment for granted and to always be open to new ideas and challenges. This book would be great for anyone in the financial services business, but the author also weaves in enough practical investing information that it is useful for people who are not in the industry, and he does so in way that is easy to understand.

Specifically, the author helps individuals realize the importance of building an investing plan tailored around their own values, goals, tolerance for risk and time horizon. This will help them tune out the noise of the financial media and focus on spending quality time with the people they love, doing things they are passionate about!

Great book!
