Publisher's summary

Sherry has struggled all her life to understand who she is, where she comes from, and, most importantly, why her mother slapped her cheek one summer afternoon. The incident has haunted Sherry, and it causes her to dig into her family's past. Like many family histories, it is fractured and reluctant to reveal its secrets; but Sherry remains determined.

In just a few days' time, her extended family will gather for a reunion, and Sherry sets off across the country with her mother, Dumpling, to join them. What Sherry and Dumpling find on their trip is nothing less than the assorted pieces of their family's past. Pulled together, they reveal a history of amazing survival and abundant joy.

Wow!!!

Loved it! I was reluctant in the beginning. I really didn't want to listen to a book about slaves. It hurts too much. I'm so glad I did, because this book is so much more.

So nice I did it twice

I read this novel on its first release many years ago, and I could not resist experiencing the characters come to life under the magic of Myra Lucretia Taylor's narration. McFadden and Taylor are a match made in Heaven.

Truth hurts

Some times truth is stranger than fiction. Also, more hurtful. Sherry's search for the truth as to who she is leads to the story of many families. We do not like to tell the ugly sides of our family histories and we really should. Many of us like Sherry grow up wondering why we are like we are or why is my mom, dad, sisters, brothers, aunts or whoever is the way they are, without knowing the history behind the mask we put up. Ms. McFadden brings this truth home in a power way. We may all be better if we dealt with the WHOLE truth concerning our family histories. At least to the point that we know it. Good read.

A deep story within a story

In one respect, I loved many things about the book such as the great character development and the flow of the story especially when she was talking about slavery. I think that she should have written a straight up book about slavery. It drained me and I wasn't ready to be drained in that way. I needed it to be tied up a little bit more at the end. Nevertheless it intrigued me in many ways.

great story, great narration

Very entertaining. The story is told in a creative manner, although the beginning of the book has a much more poetic than the end. it almost seems like two different authors from the beginning to the end of the book. Anyway, the story is good. It offers an often forgotten and untold perspective of a Native American slave girl. The narrator was amazing!!! she embodied every character perfectly and made it easy to get lost in this book for hours.

Not what I expected.....

This book was nothing like I expected. It was better. The word play and imagery used was beautiful. It made me feel like I was in the car with Dumpling.

I'm already ordering More books from this Author

This book had me from the beginning. I would look forward to getting in my car. Before I drove off, it was playing. It brings you in and will not let go. The narrator Myra Lucretia Taylor takes you there. I normally remove or return for a credit. Not this one. At least until I've heard it one more time.
