Publisher's Summary

Nathan Makaryk's epic and daring debut rewrites the Robin Hood legend, giving voice to those history never mentioned and challenging who's really a hero and a villain.

No king. No rules.

England, 1191. King Richard is half a world away, fighting for God and his own ambition. Back home, his country languishes, bankrupt and on the verge of anarchy. People with power are running unchecked. People without are growing angry. And in Nottingham, one of the largest shires in England, the sheriff seems intent on doing nothing about it.

As the leaves turn gold in the Sherwood Forest, the lives of six people - Arable, a servant girl with a secret; Robin and William, soldiers running from their pasts; Marion, a noblewoman working for change; Guy of Gisbourne, Nottingham's beleaguered guard captain; and Elena Gamwell, a brash, ambitious thief - become intertwined.

And a strange story begins to spread....

How historical does a historical novel need to be

I really do try not to get too arsey about the history in historical fiction. I read Fantasy novels purporting to be based on mediaeval Britain so hey nonny nonny pedantry isn’t worth the effort when reading for enjoyment. However, I do expect authors to try. Nobody but nobody in 12th century England ever snuggled up to a sack of potatoes which wouldn’t arrive from South America until 400 years later!

Would have done better in the fantasy category

Historical and language inaccuracies were too distracting, I got a third of the way through then gave up. Respect to the author, it seemed very appealing, but his editorial team slipped up.

Disappointing

Historical inaccuracies and 21st Century terminology made me give up on this book. I stayed with it until it became unbearable to continue.

Craig

Very disjointed and poorly written. The author needs to some research as he says that they were eating potatoes 300 years before they were introduced to Europe Very disappointed in this book

kept my attention

I dont know anything about history nor did I recognise this as the same story as that told by the uk television series of 50 -60 years ago. It did however keep me engaged for the whole of the (long) book. I normally listen to audiobooks when exercising or doing chores but with this book I did keep listening in between those events.
