Publisher's Summary

A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It's our nature.

Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they're enabling countless new tribes to be born - groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming.

And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can't provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals - people just like you who have a passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.

If you think leadership is for other people, think again - leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead.

If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a "sheepwalker" - someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don't do very well these days.

Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers....It's not easy, but it's easier than you think.

"Tribes make us special in our own minds..."

Tribalism has evolved from the genetic, to the regional, to the religious, to the national...to the brand. A good book, but he should have hired a better narrator.

    "the worst audio book ever"

I never write reviews. But this book was so bad I had to warn others.

First of all the narration was awful. But I decided to listen further hoping the content is better than the narrator. It was a jumble of obvious and same old ideas. Do not waste your money and time on this book.

    "Seth! Seth! Seth! Seth!"

If the world is formed of tribes, and if all tribes need a leader, then surely Seth Godin is the leader of leaders. This book is so fun, informative and easily digestible that when I got to the end, I immediately hit Play and started it again. Thanks to the ideas and concepts in this book, I've brushed off my blogs and my Facebook account, and I'm working harder than ever to bring my ideas into the world by gathering together those of like minds. Read this book and join the tribe!

    "Garbage."

the author of this book has such a high ego that it fills the room in which you're listening to it and suffocates you. he has a few good points but mostly it is bashing on organized religion. I want to find a way to return it. he speaks to claim to know what faith is and denounces religion entirely.

what can you hope to gain from someone who has that kind of logic.

I enjoy Seth's work, and I love the simplicity of the message in this book. I like it so much I also bought the hard cover version.

    "When the student is ready..."

I had to drive 15hrs in one day, this book is less than 4hrs long, it contains so much thought provoking information that I didn't have time to finish it; on my drive I was either listening or thinking!

I have known of Seth for many years, however I have never really 'noticed' Seth, until now. His style is infectious with a perfect balance of left hemisphere and then right hemisphere - like Brian Tracy suggests when communicating; 'windscreen wipers'... left then right then left etc.

Before reading this book I knew something was required, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Now I know the missing piece of the puzzle is leadership. If you are at the point in your career where you have so much to give but you are still not sure on the 'how' then this book is for you. Although Seth avoids 'how-to' information he provides just enough rope for you to work it out yourself.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. But only if you are ready to hear/read what it means to you - no more hiding, no more shying away, no more fear. I knew I should admire Seth, now I know why I do.

    Enjoy :- )

    "Start them drums! "

A great book. Provocative and erudite in Seth's inimitable way. Highly tweetable... (Though he calls Tweets, twits!). Found myself scribbling many notes. Now I'm going to start it over and make some more.

    "Just start leading now"

This book in my view can be summarised in one profound statement 'Just start leading now'. This might sound simple however you are about to buy this book because you are not
just leading now. This book has radically changed my philosophy of leadership. I will apply 'Just start leading now philosophy to my PhD.

    "Inspiration + A system"

I'm 'starting a tribe' right now.

Personal trainers that work for cheaper to help the community in London, then if it works maybe across the UK... Livefit.co.uk if you want to get involved...

Point is Seth's words and case studies are setting off great ideas about expressing it and hooking trainers by giving them a platform.

If you're already thinking around this subject all you need is some stimulation from a systemic level to apply to your own ideas. Seth will plant that seed, you make it grow.

Then the tick lists; same principle but easy to note down and come back to. Easy to show other people you work with.

Good luck. Let's make some change.

"I loved it! Book is filled with new knowledge"

I loved this book. Seth provided some very clear and compelling description of leadership in the Internet enabled age and what makes one a remarkable leader. This book is recommended for anyone who wishes to lead large or small tribes and create change in the Internet age and traditionally. I put this book on the same rating as Peter Thiel's zero to One.

"An Inspirational Kick up The Backside"

I'm now doing what I always wanted to do. Leading a small tribe of musicians. Speaking up has never been easy, but with the words of Seth ringing in my ears it's just got a whole lot easier. I no longer feel repressed as I once did, but empowered to lead in a world where women are still denounced and discouraged from taking strong stances and roles that change the world. To hell with the status quo. Life's too short to renege on my vision any more. This was just the catalyst I needed to spark things off. Highly recommended but you'll have to come out of the leadership closet in order to really benefit. This is a book for Doers... Enjoy.😀
