Publisher's Summary

Available in audio for the first time since its publication in 1970, and narrated by the author, Germaine Greer.

A worldwide best seller, The Female Eunuch is a landmark book in the history of the women's movement and a ground-breaking feminist tract. Drawing from history, literature, and popular culture - past and present - Germaine Greer's searing examination of women's oppression is both an important social commentary and a passionately argued polemical masterpiece. This is one of the most famous, most widely read books on feminism ever written.

"A dazzling combination of erudition, eccentricity and eroticism." (Newsweek)
"Intelligent, funny and beautifully written." (Vogue)

great reading

I thought this worked great as an audiobook.

Like a previous reviewer I was a little ashamed at not having read the book- I've bought a copy since- simply because I came across it very cheap in Oxfam- and I was surprised how much denser it looked on the page- so that's an achievement- to make a dense book easy audio.

It wouldn't have worked nearly so well without Germaine Greer reading it herself- it was great to have a narrator that had a complete understanding of the text and an authorial authority over it, adding a (very occassional) footnote and, once, a rather telling 'Huh!'

Audible ought to now engage her to narrate a few Barbara Cartland romances- her reading of extracts from Cartland and Georgette Hayer were screamingly funny.

Has dated, but important to have read it

I'm embarrassed that I hadn't read this before, and would have benefited from it decades ago. Although many things have changed, many things remain as true now as when this book was written. It was ok in audible format, though narrative works are more enjoyable in this format.

Absolute drivel; it's almost comical.

Don't bother. Seriously. You won't learn anything. At most it will give you a good laugh. the narrator is pretty good, even if she does say libido in a funny way.

Read by the author

it was great to be able to listen to this must-read as I would have never made time to read it. It's always a particular treat to hear an author read their own work and Greer is particularly entertaining!

Must read for freedom & equality

Excellent collection of feminist and historical literature in Greer's indomitable straight forward style. We have come a long way from the first suffragettes but not far enough when most womens work at home is still largely unpaid and marriage benefits society and men, not women and mothers. Everyone knows a nice woman chucked out in middle age after keeping house and raising the children, to live near poverty while he has a younger model AND his career! Stinks
