In seiner "Traumdeutung" geht es einerseits darum, auf diesem Wege eingeprägte, aber verschüttete seelische Konflikte aufzudecken, andererseits aber auch um die Beurteilung von Gesellschaften verschiedener Völker. Das geschieht natürlich in diagnostischer Absicht; ihre Gepflogenheiten nämlich sind es nach seiner Ansicht, die zu Zwangsneurosen führen, denen sich der Einzelne nur schwer entziehen kann.
"Die Traumdeutung" gilt als Vorläufer von "Totem und Tabu", wurde jedoch etliche Jahre früher und auch intensiver aufgenommen. Geforscht wird weiterhin, jeder ist ja schließlich ein mehr oder weniger ausgebildetes Exemplar des Homo Sapiens, dessen Entwicklung nach wie vor auf die Spur zu kommen ist.
