Publisher's summary

A road map to resistance in the Trump era from internationally acclaimed journalist, activist, and best-selling author Naomi Klein.

"This book is a toolkit to help understand how we arrived at this surreal political moment, how to keep it from getting a lot worse, and how, if we keep our heads, we can flip the script and seize the opportunity to make things a whole lot better in a time of urgent need. A toolkit for shock-resistance." (Naomi Klein, from the preface)

The election of Donald Trump is a dangerous escalation in a world of cascading crises. Trump's vision - a radical deregulation of the US economy in the interest of corporations, an all-out war on "radical Islamic terrorism", and sweeping aside climate science to unleash a domestic fossil fuel frenzy - will generate wave after wave of crises and shocks to the economy, to national security, to the environment.

In No Is Not Enough, Naomi Klein explains that Trump, extreme as he is, is not an aberration but a logical extension of the worst and most dangerous trends of the past half century. In exposing the malignant forces behind Trump's rise, she puts forward a bold vision for a mass movement to counter rising militarism, racism, and corporatism in the United States and around the world.

Great story, TERRIBLE narrator

The content of the book is excellent. Naomi reviews her previously studied subjects of disaster capitalism, and puts them in context of the Trump presidency today. This book was written only months before Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, but is shocking how accurate her predictions were.

The narrator is awful though. She has very little emotion in her voice. She talks in a low "vocal fry" and trails off at the end of sentences constantly. The volume is not loud enough because the audio was not mastered. Compensating by turning up the volume causes the pop of consonants to scream out, due to the lack of compression. Her voice also badly needs equalization to turn down 800 Hz because it is painfully loud. I can't turn up the book enough to hear it, without certain syllables and consonants popping out, hurting my ears. Please get Naomi to read it, or literally any other female professional voiceover talent!

The bulk of the book rehashes what the 45th president of the United States has done during his first 9 months in office. If you read Naomi Klein, you probably follow the news and are aware of the current situation. So, reviewing 45's presidency feels redundant.
That being said, the final section discusses possible courses of action to build a better future. This is where this book is valuable. It presents some bold ideas, and makes a case for how and why we could implement them.

I would prefer Naomi as narrator

I would much prefer to listen to Naomi. She is energetic and engaging - excited by her life's work and eager to empower others to address the challenges of the world. This narrator, to me, felt depressing, downtrodden. The tone is flat and disengaging. This aspect disappoints me because the audio experience is as important as the literary subject. Without it, the words become white noise to me.

Good critique of neoliberalism and the Trump doctrine, incoherent solutions

Naomi Klein delivers a stinging and accurate critique of neoliberalism, but falls short when it comes to presenting solutions. The book is worth reading for its well reasoned criticism of market fundamentalism and modern day technocracy. Klein accurately describes how modern day right wing parties exploit crises in order to push authoritarian solutions that people would overwhelmingly reject in ordinary circumstances.

Where she falls short is in believing that the real tensions that the right wing exploits (cynically) can just be papered over or ignored. There are real tensions between the adoption of open borders and the sustainability of the welfare state. There are tensions between the secularism she would have society wholeheartedly accept with its vision of inclusion for alternative sexual orientations, and her vision of multiculturalism which also allows the unabated promotion of regressive religious ideologies. Not making choices between these very variant alternative visions and thinking that a large platform that is everything to everyone is a solution is ultimately hopelessly naive - and leaves us open to further exploitation by fascist forces. Not making choices is a choice.

The book is still worth reading for the aforementioned critique of neoliberalism, but unfortunately falls short of delivering anything close to a comprehensive alternative.

Excellent

Very informative, wise and timely. It provides a solid background on how we got in the current situation, while also providing bold (and desperately needed) alternatives for transformation.

This is good and timely analysis.

She does a good job of explaining how the Trump problem is bigger than just Trump.

Obviously timely; critical, inspiring strategy

This is an important culmination of Naomi Klein's research & profound insight, applied to the time and opportunity where it is not only possible and needed, but essential. All who even contemplate a better world - or a future world at all - should read this book - and engage in the transformative work she (& all who have inspired her) have laid out.

Excellent Strategies for Making America Humane

Would you listen to No Is Not Enough again? Why?

Yes - very important concepts in book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of No Is Not Enough?

The fact that just defeating trump isn't enough - because then we'll be back where we were before he got elected. We need a vision of how things should be and promote that - and then defeat trump.
