Publisher's summary

Dogs are the most social animals on the planet, second only to humans in their ability to read and understand emotion. Even chimps and bonobos, our closest genetic relatives, are no match for dogs when it comes to social cognition.

Jennifer Arnold understands this better than anyone, having spent the past 25 years training service dogs for people with disabilities at Canine Assistants. She is a pioneer in the emerging field of "bond-based" dog training, and her methods have overturned the conventional wisdom, which holds that dogs must learn to obey external cues like "sit", "stay", and "heel." In contrast, Arnold's groundbreaking methodology, bond-based choice teaching, rests on the belief that dogs are social learners, and they can be taught to make choices and interpret what we want from them, as opposed to simply following commands.

changes your relationship with your pup

this is an excellent book. the philosophy is so simple.... I just wish Jennifer Arnold could have offered some tips on using this philosophy with shelter dogs in an environment that is so constantly high-stress.

Love is all you need, the details are in this book

I've read this about 20 times. So much of my life is about dog training these days medical dogs service dogs. This book answers and vividly demonstrates in a scientific yet transcendent way; the NEW HOW, of going from a very good trainer... to a standout SD educator and demonstrating why and how to raise an intelligently disobedient, life-saving, companion.

I'd encourage beginning trainers to read this also.

But experienced trainers; THIS IS A MUST READ GAME CHANGING BEGINNING OF A BETTER ERA IN the underpinnings and philosophy of effective and productive CANINE EDUCATION.

Not to mention this is the best relationship I've ever had with a dog is educating this way. To get the most out of this book, I'd recommend you start with her earliest books and work up to this philosophic paradigm shift. This book will help you understand, part of the future of Canine Assistants Service Dog process.

Evolve

If you could sum up Love Is All You Need in three words, what would they be?

Bonding over Force. As I continue to learn and work with my dog - a very, very smart Belgian Tervuren - I am surprised everyday by her willingness to do the right things. She isn't perfect and neither am I. We're a great team.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Love Is All You Need?

There were several. The one that made me laugh out loud was "Quit Acting Like Your Father's People". Having your dog act out or go crazy barking when she's not a barker must be similar to children having meltdowns in stores. It totally fits. There are days. ... :-)

What about Jennifer Arnold’s performance did you like?

Love the southern twang!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Have to give this more thought!

Any additional comments?

I find as my bond gets stronger with my dog the easier it is for she and I to work together. Hang out together - practice walking, playing, stopping, starting, staying and going 'easy'. Despite some of my ignorance when she was a puppy she has turned out great. If I take a deep breath and wait frustration fades and we get back to doing whatever we were doing.

I love her and she loves me right back.

Brilliant!!

With Love & Connection as the anchor, Jennifer Arnold explains how to best educate your dog. Her philosophy is rooted in kindness, respect & trust & it values the dog’s understanding over teaching obedience. I have used this philosophy to raise my dog (now 2) and have been amazed by all that he has learned. I receive many compliments on my dog’s joyful demeanor & excellent behavior, and I credit this book and feel thankful for the positive influence it’s made in our lives! ❤️🐶
