Publisher's summary

Filled with explosive new information, this is the definitive inside story of the case that captivated the nation and the verdict that no one saw coming....

It was the trial that stunned America, the verdict that shocked us all. On July 5, 2011, nearly three years after her initial arrest, Casey Anthony walked away, virtually scot-free, from one of the most sensational murder trials of all time. She'd been accused of killing her daughter, Caylee, but the trial only left behind more questions: Was she actually innocent? What really happened to Caylee? Was this what justice really looked like?

In Imperfect Justice, prosecutor Jeff Ashton, one of the principal players in the case's drama, sheds light on those questions and much more, telling the behind-the-scenes story of the investigation, the trial, and the now-infamous verdict. Providing an inside account of the case, Ashton, a career prosecutor for the state of Florida, goes where the press and pundits have only speculated, detailing what really happened during the investigation, showing how the prosecution built their case, and explaining how a woman so shrouded in suspicion was proclaimed innocent.

Moving beyond the simple explanations, Ashton offers an in-depth look at the complex figure of Casey Anthony, a woman whose lies he spent three years trying to understand. And yet this focus on Casey came with its own risks; here he details how this widespread fixation on Casey - both in the media and in the trial - may have undermined the case itself. As everyone got caught up in the quest to understand the supposed villain, somehow the victim, Caylee, was all but forgotten - not just to the public, but more important, to the jury.

Complete with never-before-revealed information about the case and the accused, Ashton examines what the prosecution got right, what they got wrong, and why he remains completely convinced of Casey Anthony's guilt.

Jeff is great

In light of Casey Anthony’s peacock documentary. Jeff does a great job reminding us all the little things conveniently left out of her debut.

Questions answered

Watched the entire trial which left me angry and frustrated. Jeff Ashton's book answered a lot of questions about the murder of this child by her mother, her defense attorneys, her family and lastly the jury and the verdict. Most of which was confirmation of my very own thoughts and opinions. Thank you Jeff Ashton. And I hope we hear much more from you in the future.

Wow how do the jurors sleep at night???

Jeff Aston does a wonderful job of diving into every detail, regardless of how awful they are. I have so much respect for him since I read this book. A man with a true soul retired while the woman with no soul walks free.

Great book!

Read by the author. I couldn't believe how quickly I finished it. He is a very likable man and I enjoyed the prosecution's perspective more than the defence's. I wish Mr Ashton would write more books though.

A decent listen with some notable flaws.

Having followed the trial at the time, and believing the jury got it right, I wanted to hear Ashton make the case in it's entirety. Having done so, I remain convinced that the jury got it right.

Even in hindsight, Jeff seems very sure of his case. I don't understand that. He ultimately conceded that his case had some flaws, but bemoans the fact that the jury didn't at least find her guilty of manslaughter. I agree with that. The trouble, in my opinion, is his failure to recognize that they had a clear manslaughter case, yet they charged first degree murder. Had they presented a manslaughter case, they would've increased the likelihood of conviction on that charge.

Jeff does a decent job at narration, but would have been better served outsourcing the task. Still, a good listen and worth the time of those interested in the crime and trial.

Very Informative!

Jeff Ashton laid the book out well. He answered the remaining questions I had about the crime, investigation and trial as if I had gotten to interview him myself. I appreciated the detail he gave as he explained the criminal court proceedings and the character of the people involved in the case. He also did an excellent job narrating the book. I was left with the feeling that he and his team gave it their all and the jury decision was just very unfortunate.

Overall good read

This was a great listen for anyone like me, who cannot forget the terrible tragedy of the loss of little Caylee Anthony’s life. The book gave great reviews of evidence as well as accounts and details that were told but not permitted into the trial itself. My only conflict of the book was the fact that at times the author’s own arrogance showed and he waxed and waned between that and giving credit where due. Overall though, very interesting.

Great book!!!

I am truly amazed with this book. It was so well written and very descriptive. I'm sure I will end up listening again! I learned so much more about the case than I had known previously and it made me so sad to know that there was no justice for this precious baby. Jeff did an amazing job of being diplomatic towards Jose Baez even though he clearly played dirty during the trial. I am just blown away at how good this was!
