Publisher's summary

The New York Times Best Seller

"The story Unger weaves with those earlier accounts and his original reporting is fresh, illuminating and more alarming than the intelligence channel described in the Steele dossier." (The Washington Post)

House of Trump, House of Putin offers the first comprehensive investigation into the decades-long relationship among Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the Russian Mafia that ultimately helped win Trump the White House.

It is a chilling story that begins in the 1970s, when Trump made his first splash in the booming, money-drenched world of New York real estate, and ends with Trump’s inauguration as president of the United States. That moment was the culmination of Vladimir Putin’s long mission to undermine Western democracy, a mission that he and his hand-selected group of oligarchs and Mafia kingpins had ensnared Trump in, starting more than 20 years ago with the massive bailout of a string of sensational Trump hotel and casino failures in Atlantic City. This book confirms the most incredible American paranoias about Russian malevolence.

To most, it will be a hair-raising revelation that the Cold War did not end in 1991 - that it merely evolved, with Trump’s apartments offering the perfect vehicle for billions of dollars to leave the collapsing Soviet Union. In House of Trump, House of Putin, Craig Unger methodically traces the deep-rooted alliance between the highest echelons of American political operatives and the biggest players in the frightening underworld of the Russian Mafia. He traces Donald Trump’s sordid ascent from foundering real estate tycoon to leader of the free world. He traces Russia’s phoenix-like rise from the ashes of the post-Cold War Soviet Union as well as its ceaseless covert efforts to retaliate against the West and reclaim its status as a global superpower.

Without Trump, Russia would have lacked a key component in its attempts to return to imperial greatness. Without Russia, Trump would not be president. This essential audiobook is crucial to understanding the real powers at play in the shadows of today’s world.

The appearance of key figures in this book - Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and Felix Sater to name a few - will ring with haunting significance in the wake of Robert Mueller's report and as others continue to close in on the truth.

Critic reviews

“The story Unger weaves with those earlier accounts and his original reporting is fresh, illuminating and more alarming than the intelligence channel described in the Steele dossier.” (The Washington Post)

“Omarosa vs. Trump may be the political pro wrestling match of the week, but a more serious confrontation may be prompted by a book that came out Tuesday, alleging that President Donald Trump may be a Russian asset compromised by billions of laundered dollars over decades of shady real estate deals.” (Newsweek)

“Unger, a veteran journalist and author, takes the reader on a veritable tour of sleazy night clubs, restaurants and resorts frequented by Russian oligarchs and criminals in this book subtitled "The Untold Story of Donald Trump and the Russian Mafia." Often, that tour leads to the doors of the White House and Trump Tower, and the implication is clear to even the most obtuse reader: Trump is in Putin's pocket and those of the financiers who have grown immensely rich through their associations with the country's putative dictator.” (Spectator USA)

Deep Trump connections with Russian Mob and Putin

Details Trump's financial fall and rebirth funded by Russian cash purchases when multiple bankruptcies causes banks to deny him any new loans.

Also details Putin's rise amid the Russian chaos and how he mastered the Russian Mob and oligarchs and state security under his personal control. Shows how Trump was useful for money laundering, then in monitoring oligarchs travelling in the US (through Bayrock), and now as President.

WOW!!! The amount of corruption is staggering

A++ for the research involved in writing this book. This book should be required for all of congress to listen to. The breakdown at the end was very helpful being that you kinda loose tract of all the people involved and how they fit into the big picture! Interesting that if the pronunciation of the names is correct that means journalist and congress members and administration officials have all been pronouncing Putin’s first name wrongly.

The Russian names took me back to nick naming "Rasky" when reading Crime and Punushment in college

A good rundown on Trump Russian connections back to 1987 and the present day situation.

A must-read

Astonishing amount of evidence that our president is beholden to Putin, and has been sucking up to and then trapped by Russian organized crime and the FSB. Please vote for those who will impeach him.

A troubling catalogue of blurred lines between business, government, and organized crime

Well written and researched- certain turns of phrase are repeated in multiple chapters, but this does allow casual readers to graze chapters and still have the context to get meaning from the story.
This book is full of surprising connections within a web of criminality and government.
At the heart of this we have Government officials working with shady business men to cheat taxes and divert shared natural resources to a shadow private sector in ways that hurt little people and make for horrible foreign policy decisions.
The energy industry in the US has conducted itself in exactly this way for the last +100 years. It’s upsetting, but the Russians are essentially horning in on the US business gangster gambit.

Riveting Blockbuster TRUE CRIME Book

True Crime in real time. It does not get more fascinating than this. This is a TRUE CRIME story about something that is happening in real time also. The quiet conquering of a nation. The United States is captured and conquered through propaganda, groupies, social media, and lost souls looking for meaning and value beyond their real-time existence. The United States is no longer a Republic or a Democracy. It is a Kleptocracy. And Donald Trump is the Black Swan many did not see coming. Fasten your seatbelts!

Well Done!

This book lays it all out on the table. It tells me the most about the Russian involvement with Trump, the divider and chief, during Trumps mobster life. I hope and pray that he does not get away with all the EVIL this man has perpetuated on the World.
