Publisher's summary

The day before Halloween 2004 was the last day on Earth for respected, well-liked college professor Fred Jablin. That morning, a neighbor discovered his body lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of Jablin's Virginia home. Police immediately turned their attentions to the victim's ex-wife, Piper, a petite, pretty Texas lawyer who had lost a bitter custody battle and would do anything to get her kids back. But Piper was in Houston, 1,000 miles away, at the time of the slaying and couldn't possibly have been the killer...could she?

So began an investigation into one of the most bizarre cases Virginia and Texas law enforcement agencies had ever encountered: a twisted conspiracy of lies, rage, paranoia, manipulation, and savage murder that would ensnare an entire family - including two lethally close look-alike sisters - and reveal the shocking depravities possible when a dangerously disordered mind slips into madness.

Welcome to true crime satisfaction!

For context, I listen to true crime audiobooks and podcasts all day, every day. It's some sort of fascination of mine--and I am embarrassingly versed in the genre. I LOVED THIS BOOK--and I *rarely* say that about true crime books. Most have tons of flaws. Not this guy.

Bullet points to condense enthusiasm:
• A fairly unknown story
• Insane, batpoop characters who are SO interesting
• Great narrator--clearly knows where the dips are, and when paragraphs end
• Entire thing not just court trial proceedings
• C'mon, Ann Rule loves it. Freakin' Ann Rule!

Use your credit. So satisfying.

Horrid narration.

What disappointed you about Die, My Love?

The narration has turned me off very early on. I cannot continue. The reader's faking of the so-called southern accent (ah for I, etc) and her inflections in the verbiage that goes along with the bad accent, well, it's just more than I can stand a minute longer. I have tried overlooking this and just concentrating on the story, being a lover of the author, but it is impossible.

Has Die, My Love turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but the narrator has turned me off from any other books she has read.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Moe Rock?

Scott Brick is one of my favorites, but just about anyone who would read this book straight out, instead of so badly trying to play the parts, would have been fine with me. I don't require a lot of dramatization. After all, these are not screen plays, they are BOOKS TO BE READ, mainly the old-fashioned way, to one's self. I think a narrator has to be darn close to an educated, experienced actor to do justice when reading audiobooks because they were generally not written for live acting.

Any additional comments?

I wonder if whoever chooses narrators for these audiobooks realizes how important the choice is to the sales. They have just lost the sale of one book, as I return this. And it took a lot, because I like the author a lot and am a nut for true crime. But this one is way overboard as far as what I can stand! I am very disappointed. Usually I can will myself to disregard annoying things like this, but not this time.

this story could have been a lot better.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

yes, i would develop relationships better. eg: more detail on how piper began some of her affairs started, why, and how she interacted with these lovers.

i would also like to hear less about tina since what i heard told me basically nothing about the two of them.

the book went on and on and i was getting tired of listening to it.

If you’ve listened to books by Kathryn Casey before, how does this one compare?

yes i liked her reading of shattered but then, that was a better story.

i found her performance lacking here but i did not like the book and this DOES affect how i look at the narrator sometimes (not always).

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

her voice was for some reason not easy to listen to in this book, this i did feel right from the beginning.

i had felt the same way when i started reading another book with another reader (dolores clayborne) but i LOVED that book and got to like the reader.

Could you see Die, My Love being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

yes. it would make a good movie i bet.

Interesting story, awful narration

I’ve listened to dozens, maybe hundreds of audiobooks and this is the first one I’ve ever written a review of, because the narrator was so terrible. She tried to do NY, TX and Virginia accents and failed dismally. I’m pretty sure she has never spoken with anyone who actually came from any of those places (I say this as a NY native who has lived in GA for 25 years). The story itself was interesting, typical true crime. I almost stopped listening because of the narration, but I have a long commute. Overall, I’m on the fence as to whether it was worth the credit or not.

Interesting story, annoying reader

Kathryn Casey is a reliably good writer. Too bad the reader mars this audiobook by trying waaaaay too hard. Mostly her tone is that of a female Joe Friday (under 50’s, Dragnet, look it up). New Yorkers all sound like longshoremen, except when they sound like they’re from Boston. Apparently all Southern women simper and whine. She calls the Jewish prayer for the dead Ka-DISH, like something from the deli. Will finish with 2 hours to go, but it’s beginning to grate on my ears.

Narration was distracting

The story is interesting but the narration was distracting. I will be careful to not purchase any books with this narrator again.

Mispronounced words can ruin an experience!

Great story! As a Virginia resident, and former resident of the Richmond metropolitan area, I remember this story. The author’s research was great. I only wished that the reader had done the SAME! It is hen-RI-co!! It is a long I and to hear it wrong SO OFTEN was like listening to nails on a chalkboard! It’s a simple thing to check out. This drove me crazy! Very disappointed!

Okay...

This is pretty interesting mainly because the accused did some stupid things in spite of being an attorney. The narration is annoying. Her idea of a southern accent and a NY accent is so far off base it's comical.

To Die for

I think this was a another well written/Narrated book. I really think Kathryn is a top notch writer ! Moe Rock I feel did a good job narrating this Audible book. I loved her Narration, in the last book about Celeste Beard. I think she had it down in that book pretty much to the science of going into Character. They we're both good ? Top notch Moe on the book about Steven Beard True Crime. Laura Blair Nelson.

Good story, dreadful narration of male voices.

Where does Die, My Love rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The actual story behind Die, My Love is intriguing and well written. But the narrator nearly ruined the book for me.

What other book might you compare Die, My Love to and why?

I enjoy many true crime novels and this one ranks up with the best of them in terms of the story.

How could the performance have been better?

The narration was irritatingly bad, the female narrator does a spectacularly awful job at trying to imitate male voices. Each male character is dreadful in 'his' own unique way by this narrator, including one man appearing to have a lisp. Several men are given over the top New Jersey accents, while other men appear to be southern drawlers. Just really bad.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Die, My Love

Any additional comments?

Please get a different narrator, an otherwise really enjoyable read was distracting and at times, almost painfully laughable.
