Solid true crime

The story of senseless self-destruction and its reverberations. This one bummed me out, but it is a well told story.

Enthralling

I could not stop listening to this book! I am an avid true crime junkie and this was exactly what I was looking for. Great narration, I wonder what happened to the movie that was coming out because I am definitely inspired to see it. Detailed, entertaining, engaging, better than expected. Loved it.

A great telling of a sad true story!

From the beginning of the story, something starts gnawing at you that things are headed in a bad direction for the two main characters. Thus, it makes for a novel that's hard to put down. The excellent movie made from the book must have been fairly easy to do, considering how the author paints such a clear picture of the characters and the environment. I highly recommend the book and the movie!

Excellent journalism

Any additional comments?

Incredibly tragic story very sensitively handled by a fine journalist. There were no winners in this tale, and no real villains as there often are in true crime stories, only a terrible collision of personalities that crushes the lives of all involved in a moment of lost control. The people who lived this tale and the world they inhabit are brilliantly, heartbreakingly described. I hope the film, starring the wonderful Emilia Clarke, serves them as well.

Interesting story but no sympathy

This is a good story but felt so sympathy for Susan or Cathy . I sorta hated both of them . I simply could not care what happened with Susan and was glad when she was finally was killed off in the book. Maybe this is cold hearted but she was simply like a likable person and sometimes when you threatened stomp your feet you get exactly what’s coming for you. Felt sorry for Mark but at the end he got what he deserved too. He should have known better but if I had to live with his wife I would most likely done the same thing .

Quickly became one of my favorite Audio books

Great story, good author and great talent for the audio. Hard to stop listening and it really felt like I could see everything happening. It takes a lot for me to give anything 5 stars but I did.

Excellent Listen

What made the experience of listening to Above Suspicion the most enjoyable?

The engaging expressive portrayal of the characters.

What other book might you compare Above Suspicion to and why?

None.

Which scene was your favorite?

The court haggling.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me sad, but in a positive way.

Any additional comments?

Joe Sharkey's masterful writing shows how, in the words of S M Eisenstein, the most interesting question in the psychology of art is neither theme nor content, but how this theme or content becomes, from an "object" of reality_an object of art., how an 'event' becomes a 'work.'

Heartbreaking story, mediocre performance

Sharkey did a fine job researching and telling this sad tale, but the performance does little to capture the mountain people that make it so rich. (As a glaring example, folks in the southern Appalachians don't say a-pa-LAY-sha, but a-pa-la-chya).

Reads like fiction, but is true!

This was a very involved true story that was filled with surprises and people doing some very stupid things. It truly reads like fiction and I checked back a time or two to be certain it was a true story. I understand it has been a movie, but must have missed that!
