New Year’s Day 1970
Neighbors and friends had gathered at the house of Sean and Kitty Forde to celebrate the new year the night before. But by dawn, Gardaí are called to investigate a massacre; the only survivor is their ten-year-old daughter Teresa. Among the bodies, investigators cannot locate Kitty. And then little Teresa begins to talk; she tells them the teenage boy that lives nearby, Freddie Cullen, turned up at the party. She says there was an argument, and that Freddie had a shotgun. New Year’s Day 2000
Teresa Forde is now married, with three daughters. She suffers deep scars from the trauma inflicted thirty years ago, and with the recent death of her husband, has grown increasingly fragile. Caring for her falls to her eldest daughter, Abigail. On the first day of the new millennium, Abigail returns to their home to find her sister, Leanora, brutally murdered. Her mother Teresa has vanished. Detective Julia Harte is called in to investigate. This case is unusual; two women – mother and daughter – vanished without a trace, thirty years apart. As Julia and her team try to piece together the clues in this case, a killer is lurking, watching them draw closer, always one step ahead.

Now it's New Year's Day once again, a date Abigail both hates and fears. For a long time she has grieved for her sister and searched for her mother, hoping one day to find answers. In dark moments, when the fear felt too great, she has told her own daughter Lea that if anything bad ever happens, to find the detective that worked on Leanora’s murder and Teresa’s disappearance. As the sun dawns on a new year, and two men enter Abigail’s house to continue what started decades ago, Lea must remember her mother’s warning. Someone is hurting the women in her family. Perhaps the detective her mother named – Julia Harte – can help.
