Acerca de esta escucha
In this poignant memoir, as candid and indelible as The Glass Castle and Memorial Drive, a writer takes on the conflict between the love that binds us to home and the desire to escape it for good.
On a highway in Houston, Texas, Sarah LaBrie’s mother was found screaming at passing cars, terrified she would be murdered by invisible assailants. The diagnosis of schizophrenia that followed compelled Sarah to rethink her childhood, marked at turns by violence and all-consuming closeness.
Digging into the events that led to her mother’s break, Sarah traces her family history of mental illness, from the dysphoria that plagued her great-grandmother, a granddaughter of slaves, to her own experience with depression as a scholarship student at Brown. At the same time, she navigates a decades-long fixation on a novel she can’t finish but can't abandon, her complicated feelings about her white partner, and a fraught friendship colored by betrayal.
Spanning the globe from Houston’s Third Ward to Paris to Tallinn and New York to Los Angeles, No One Gets to Fall Apart is an unflinching chronicle of one woman's attempt to forge a new future through a better understanding of the past.

Historia
Unwanted and neglected from birth, Barbara Graham had to overcome the odds just to survive. Her beauty was both a blessing and a curse—offering her too many options of all the wrong kind. Her innate sensitivity left her vulnerable to the harsh realities of the street, where she was left to fend for herself before she reached double digits. Her record of petty crimes spoke to a life that constantly teetered on the brink of disaster. But in 1953, a catastrophic twist of fate would catapult her out of obscurity and into the headlines.

Historia
In A Kid from Marlboro Road, past and present intermingle as family stories are told and retold. The narrative careens between the prior generation’s colorful sojourns in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen and the softer world of Gibson, the town on Long Island where they live now. There are scenes in the Rockaways, at Belmont racetrack, and in Montauk. Edward Burns’s buoyant first novel is a bildungsroman, yet out of one boy’s story a collective warmth emerges, a certain kind of American tale, raucous and joyous.

Historia
At forty, Peter, an asylum lawyer in New York City, is overworked and isolated. He spends his days immersed in the struggles of immigrants only to return to an empty apartment and occasional hook-ups with a man who wants more than Peter can give. But when the asylum case of a young gay man pierces Peter's numbness, the event that he has avoided for twenty years returns to haunt him. Ann, his mother, who runs a women's retreat center she founded after leaving his father, is wounded by the estrangement from Peter but cherishes the world she has built.

Historia
Isaac is at a crossroads in his young life. Growing up in Missouri, the son of a caustic, hard-driving father, he was conditioned to suppress his artistic pursuits and physical desires, notions that didn’t align with a traditional view of masculinity. But now, in late ’80s Chicago, Isaac has finally carved out a life of his own. He is sensitive and tenderhearted and has built up the courage to seek out a community. Yet just as he begins to embrace who he is, two social catalysts—the AIDS crisis and Rodney King’s attack—collectively extinguish his hard-earned joy.

Dorothy Graham is dead, which is inconvenient, not least for her. Luckily, she has planned for this eventuality. Now, if any of the truly dreadful people she is related to want to get their hands on her money, they’re going to have to do so via a fiendish difficult and frankly bizarre competition of Dorothy’s devising. After all, just because you’re dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a last laugh at the expense of people who made your life miserable.

Historia
Perle Mesta was a force to be reckoned with. In her heyday, this wealthy globe-trotting Washington widow was one of the most famous women in America, garnering as much media attention as Eleanor Roosevelt. Renowned for her world-class parties featuring politicians and celebrities, she was very close to three presidents–Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson. Truman named her as the first female envoy to Luxembourg, which inspired the hit musical based on Perle’s life – “Call Me Madam” – which starred Ethel Merman, ran on Broadway for two years and later became a movie.

Historia
It’s 1991. Em moved to New York City for excitement and possibility, but the big city isn’t quite what she thought it would be. Working as a literary agent’s assistant, she’s down to her last nineteen dollars but has made two close friends: Emily, a firebrand theater director living in a Lower East Side squat, and Lucy, a middle-aged novelist and single mom. Em’s life revolves around these two wildly different women and their vividly disparate yet equally assured views of art and the world. But who is Em, and what does she want to become?

Humpback whales are among the most intelligent animals on Earth. Some scientists believe they might even surpass humans in self-awareness, empathy, and communication skills. In this episode, we swim with a whale as he teams up with other humpbacks to use bubbles to catch fish, rescues a sea lion, and puts his own spin on melodies sung by whales across the Pacific Ocean. This is the world in its natural state, defined by seasons, routines, and cycles. By the time this whale is ready to close one eye and go to sleep, you will be too.

A girl must watch her figure but never be vain. She must be intelligent but never a know-it-all. She must be ambitious, if she is clever, but not in a way that shows. She must cook and sew and make do and mend. She must know (but never say) that these skills are, in some fundamental way, flawed and frivolous—feminine. Girls must stay small, even as they grow. Women must show restraint. And yet. In books, in the landscape of imagination, a girl can run free.

I loved it so much
Sarah LaBrie’s *No One Gets to Free Out Fall Apart* is an unflinching exploration of a deeply sensitive topic that resonates profoundly within many African-American families: mental illness. Sarah courageously pulls back the veil, offering readers an unvarnished depiction of what it’s like to live within a brilliant, productive Black family that has, for generations, faced the complexities of mental health challenges.
Her honesty is refreshing and necessary. In many Black families, the presence of mental illness is often treated with silent acceptance or hidden away, a legacy of survival in a society that stigmatizes both race and mental health. Sarah addresses this with grace and clarity, weaving personal stories that show how mental illness, when unaddressed, can reverberate through generations, sometimes threatening the very fabric of family unity.
What sets this memoir apart is Sarah’s ability to hold space for both the pain and the triumph. She shines a light on the importance of understanding, acceptance, and support—while also showing the resilience required to navigate life alongside mental illness. Her family’s willingness to confront their struggles publicly is both bold and inspiring, giving readers permission to reflect on their own experiences and encouraging open conversations about this often-taboo subject.
Sarah’s journey is a testament to strength and survival, not just for herself but for all families grappling with mental health challenges. This book is a must-read, not only for those directly impacted by mental illness but for anyone seeking to understand its ripple effects on families and communities.
Thank you, Sarah, for your bravery and your contribution to this critical conversation. *No One Gets to Free Out Fall Apart* is a powerful call to action for us all to support one another and to find more compassionate ways to live with and address mental illness.

A memoir not to be missed!
I love this memoir. The book is so thought provoking, and moving. I am left finding myself hoping she ( the author) does find a way to finish her novel. The writing style is so beautiful, I can’t help but hope she gifts us with more of her work soon. This is art.

Terrible narration
This smart, talented woman wrote what was probably a good book. She definitely should NOT have been the narrator. It was a struggle to try to figure out many of words because of her nasal speech. I do not recommend the audio version of her book.

authenticity + honesty + courage= pathway to healing
The amazing memoir that remarkably allowed me to see myself as I never have and to make a tremendous step toward health. allowed me to learn more about the broken parts of me…and most importantly to make a tremendous step on my pathway.

Really heart felt writing ✨
Sarah's way of writing this book is not only highly
involving but also extremely eye opening to the important themes talked about here. As a reader who's new to schizophrenia, it was such an important reading to better understand the world of those dealing with loved ones in this mental condition. It taught me more compassion, empathy and it made me more aware of challenges that I couldn't even imagine many people have to constantly go through. It made me a more awakened human being for listening to her story and putting myself on the shoes of those involved with this mental illness. I highly recommend it!

NOT like Glass Castle or Memorial Drive...
...both of which I read and were really good and so well written. This was not. Unlike the aforementioned, this was all tell and little show. The writing was adequate but the book felt so...generic, and it shouldn't have. It was written by a black women whose mother has schizophrenia. Instead it felt like a memoir from any random person who got an MFA. Read Swallow the Ocean by Laura M. Flynn instead.
Also as an audio narrator, she's pretty bad. Very choppy.
