Story
In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset.

In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Publisher's Summary
A provocative new approach to discovering your true calling in life and achieving not just a good career but a great one.
Over the past three decades, professor Larry Smith has become something of a "career whisperer" for his students at the University of Waterloo. Each year, millions of talented college students graduate with little or no real sense of what their next steps will be, yet they are determined not to settle for so-so careers; they are looking for great careers.
Smith points out that only a few fortunate souls are born knowing exactly what they want to pursue in life. The rest of us have to stop making excuses and start asking ourselves tough questions about achieving our goals. In his straightforward, no-nonsense approach, Smith itemizes and dismisses all the usual excuses, fears, and worries that people hide behind when trying to find their true direction. His unusual take on this challenging conundrum is both universal and timely, and his stunning TEDx Talk on this subject has been viewed by more than six million people so far.
This is the perfect book for any college graduate who is wondering where he or she fits into the world. It won't necessarily be easy, but if you follow Smith's guidance, your career dreams can indeed come true.

Hopes & Dreams = Successful Career
Highly recommended for all teenagers and for anyone who is considering changing career paths.
This book will question your motives and make you reminisce about past decisions. If you're worried or scared about following your heart and going with your gut, this book will give you the confidence to be most successful and happiest in a job you truly care about. Your passion will be your driving force, for future success.
Have you been wasting your time on a career that you're not passionate about? There were times I've been told to pursue the highest paying jobs, and other times, to take whatever I can get. However, employers will soon see the lack of passion. This can leave us feeling worse off than if we had gone down the route intended, in the first place.
The book begins with computer science as a degree, as does "Gender Matters", so it's nice to listen to these two books side by side. New technologies needed to hire more than they could handle, now the rest has been left to math majors, and others fleeting from job to job.
I too fell into this lure, thinking that it was the future. When deciding which university or degree to study, it would've been beneficial for me to speak with Larry Smith. Sometimes the course title sounds appealing, but you have to beware of the modules, as this can steer you in a completely different direction. Subconsciously I was trying to meet my mother half way, by studying something with supposed future prospects. Computers are the future, therefore I should learn how to use a computer... I hate computers!
Whilst studying art for a year, before deciding what the next step should be, I remember telling my art foundation teacher that I was thinking about art therapy as a career. However, after telling my mum, she spoke to our neighbour and they both agreed that this was a very difficult job to get into, and perhaps I should consider something else. I wasn't even fully aware of what an art therapist does, but already the idea was quickly dismissed. So many of us have dismissed opportunities and try to opt for the safer and easier route instead. In search of trying to find something easier, or anything at all after my calamity, I too went down the route of administration, because I wasn't sure how else I could earn money.
So, are you thinking short term or long term? Rarely are we given advice that actually supports what we've been put on this planet to do. Larry talks about not wasting any time, because if you are "just passing the time", then you are just waiting to die.
It can be very difficult to talk to others who do not share our beliefs of being able to make it into an unknown venture. We must surround ourselves with like-minded people, whether that be in person or via social media. Others have succeeded in the field we wish to pursue, so it is possible.
Larry Smith is a realist to dreamers. He teaches economics and architecture, but he appears to be the career advisor for the most part, as he gives many examples of students who have come to him for help.
