Publisher's summary

A delightful novel about surprising friendships, community, and the way small acts of kindness can change a life, from the best-selling author of The Story of Arthur Truluv.

Lucille Howard is getting on in years, but she stays busy. Thanks to the inspiration of her dearly departed friend Arthur Truluv, she has begun to teach baking classes, sharing the secrets to her delicious classic Southern yellow cake, the perfect pinwheel cookies, and other sweet essentials.

Her classes have become so popular that she's hired Iris, a new resident of Mason, Missouri, as an assistant. Iris doesn't know how to bake, but she needs to keep her mind off a big decision she sorely regrets.

When a new family moves in next door and tragedy strikes, Lucille begins to look out for Lincoln, their son. Lincoln's parents aren't the only ones in town facing hard choices and uncertain futures. In these difficult times, the residents of Mason come together and find the true power of community - just when they need it the most.

A heartwarming novel that reminds us that the people we come to love are often the ones we don't expect.

Good book - ho-hum narration

I wish authors would not think just because they can write a good story/book, they can read aloud well. I like Elizabeth Berg's writing and have read most of her books - this was another good one. But I do NOT like her as a narrator. There is something in her voice that I find irritating. Also, she is a bit boring - lacks emotion or inflection.

The characters are good and their growth and change interesting. The progression of the events is nice, with just enough twists and turns to keep you wanting to know what they are going to do next.

SpoilerAlert: I loved the email exchange between Iris and her ex-husband. Very thoughtful and touching.

Writers and not necessarily readers

I like this author, but couldn’t get even half way through the audiobook. The author’s voice was without any inflection, completely monotonous

meh

I love most of this author's books. I'm not terribly fond of her narration and this is definately not my favorite story of hers. this series was just not very reflective of her normal writing style.

Comforting, sweet story

Disclaimer: I love Elizabeth Berg’s stories—even when they’re predictable and cliche. She often expresses feeling and thoughts that I’ve experienced along my journey. That being said, this book was similar to a Hallmark movie. If you don’t like sweetness and comfort, this may not be your cup of tea. But it is my cup of tea & I’d have tea with Elizabeth Berg any day of the week.

Fun and bittersweet

Didn’t realize this was a sequel to Arther Truluv, a wonderful read. Nice to revisit many of the characters.

Narration is offputting

I don’t leave reviews on much, but the narration of this book in the third person is cringeworthy. I picked Elizabeth Berg because I enjoy Rosamunde Pilcher so much, but so far no comparison. I will keep listening because I paid for it but this author should not be narrating.

Elizabeth Berg never fails to pull me in…

I loved this book. I loved it when I read the actual book, and now after “reading” the audible book. I felt like I was invested in the characters this time. I absolutely loved this book.

Wonderful read

Love this story so much that I felt, at times, that I knew and cared about the characters. Highly recommend
