Publisher's summary

This one.

Nate doesn’t want to listen. He’s between missions and just wants to relax, not to travel hundreds of miles and hunt for the driver of the car that hit someone he doesn’t even know.

But ignoring the call is not an option.

This one.

What Nate had hoped would be a simple mission turns into something much more sinister, when he discovers a wide-reaching evil, festering in a small Northern California town. To confront it, he will need all the skills he’s learned working in the shadow world.

Editorial Review

The standalone all Jonathan Quinn fans needed!

Brett Battles is back with the answer to the question that left all Jonathan Quinn fans reeling: What will happen to Quinn’s partner, Nate? Still coming to terms with his new abilities and restrictions, Nate has gone rogue. Empowered by a newfound sense of justice...and probably just a touch of mental instability, he's on a mission to correct the wrongs of the world that he can. Being in his head is an experience to be remembered—and thanks to a stellar performance by narrator Zach Villa, a happy one. Packed with detailed action and amazing characters to boot (shout out to Jar), Night Man was a quality experience.

Enjoyably well-written, as always

The worst thing about this book is that you forget who Nate is, meaning in the larger Quinn series. He seems like a new person to get to know. Even the telephone cameo of Quinn himself is unrecognizable. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Then this isn't as shooting and killing as the Quinn books are, this one is more investigative than retributive. And that's okay too. Nate is accompanied/haunted by his dead girlfriend, Quinn's sister. That's kind of weird but okay. She has turned him into a non-lethal vigilante. Nate slips invisibly into a small town to solve a crime that becomes more and more entangled as he gets at the truth.

The book is engaging and interesting all the way through even though it's hard to see the Quinn-book Nate in it. See, I gave it 5 stars.

Not much emotion from narrator.

Narrator was good, but in my opinion could've put a little extra into his work, to make the storytelling that much better.

New Hero

Night Man by Brett Battles pulled me in from the very beginning. I enjoyed this new hero in the storyline. His methods were original and he accomplished justice in a new way. Zach Villa added to the book with his performance. His voice inflected the right emotions. Great start to a new series.

Good but not great

I am afraid I'm a bit jaded after too many mysteries. I thoroughly enjoy Brett Battles, but this seems not so much a thriller as some. As I said, maybe I've just listened to too many of this genre. Narration definitely a 5-star.

INCREDIBLE!!!

AMAZING book and Zach Villa is one of my favorite narrators!! I first learned of him in “The Life We Bury” and have since specifically searched for books he’s narrated. This is full of suspense from beginning to end!! LOVE IT!!

Fabulous narration of a creative plot

The book was an interesting twist on an old "good vs. evil" theme. But there was no need artificial gunfights or macho bravado often the foundation of similarly themed books. The thing that took this from a good book to a great book was the narration by Zach Villa. The hero was introspective and reflective, traits brought out vividly by Mr. Villa. His calm, patient pacing and avoidance of the artificial tools of speaking too loudly or too softly for emphasis really captured the hero's calm and methodical nature.
This is a book you need in your library.

Excellent narration

The narrator has salvaged a C+ story. I enjoyed the experience, but not the best story I've heard lately.

Oh! The suspense!

This story kept me on edge until the very end. The supernatural parts (Liz telling Nate what to do) were a bit off-putting. But, overall, the story was extremely well done and I am thrilled that the ending was happy. No unanswered questions and the story concludes neatly.
