On a cold, windswept night, Fiona arrives on a tiny, isolated island in Orkney. She accepted her old friend's invitation with some trepidation - her relationship with Madison has never been plain sailing. But as she approaches Madison's cottage, she sees that the windows are dark. The place has been stripped bare. No one knows where Madison has gone.

As Fiona tries to find out where Madison has vanished to, she begins to unravel a web of lies. Madison didn't live the life she claimed to, and now Fiona's own life is in danger....

Yet another top class thriller by Helen Callaghan

I really loved "Dear Amy" and "Everything Is Lies" and not sure how I did not notice this latest thriller by Helen Callaghan and have it in my pre-orders but just found it recently and was put off getting it because of some of the negative reviews - which now after reading I find totally unfounded as I loved this thriller.

It has been a long while since I read either of Helen Callaghan's other books in my library, I just remember them as being enthralling, so beautifully written and superb thrillers with so many plot twists and turns and in that way this third book certainly does not disappoint,

I loved the wild Scottish setting, the archaeological theme and all the characters and their backstories. It really kept me guessing right up until the end and I highly recommend to anyone looking for a really well written and thought out intriguing thriller. Excellent!

Looking forward so much to the next one.

Absolutely brilliant, really tense and atmospheric, so evocative of the setting and its subject matter.

Not her best

I bought this after enjoying two other books by Helen Callaghan: "Dear Amy, which was brilliant, and "Everything is Lies" which was also pretty good. This particular book, unfortunately, is not. It gets off to a great start, but soon settles down to long stretches of dull rather stilted and unnatural dialogue. It had a tendency to send me to sleep. The ending was a little better, but not much. I did like the date and location stamps at the start of each chapter so I always knew where I was. I also liked the setting of an archaeological dig on Orkney. Reminded me of the Shetland books by Ann Cleeves.

intense and keeps you guessing.

thoroughly enjoyed it! . narration was good and fitted the characters which is rare! couldn't wait till the end and not as i predicted. only slight criticism is i feel that the 'baddies' demise was a little far fetched.

Sadly disappointing

After reading several rave reviews & finding the premise interesting, I was looking forward to the book. However, despite good narration I didn’t enjoy the story. There was much repetition of the same phrases, the characters’ actions weren’t believable & the coincidences that happened (don’t want to give spoilers) were crazy. Too many words spent on Fiona’s emotions, insufficient character development. The archaeological info was interesting & the setting was good.

Excellent. V good listen, beautiful narration

The plot and characters are totally engaging and draw you in form the get go. This is captivating and exquisitely composed. The setting/context is spot on. If you have ever been to Orkney and or visited archeological sites you will get it. If you havent you will still get it. It is so well done.
Very very good plot indeed. Yes - some very, very tiny stretches of plausibilty, but that is art, drama and creativity which weave together to create a very, very good read/listen indeed.
Apart from that, this is the most beautifully narrated audiobook I have ever heard. Well done Morven Christie

Badly edited

Story and narration are great..... whoever edited has missed quite a few parts of the story where a paragraph has been repeated which makes for confusing listening.

Night missing still falls

This is a reasonably enjoyable story although I found the last hour rather stretched in believability. I also got tired of the narrators voice. It’s not the most enjoyable book I’ve read.
