Acerca de esta escucha
Night is an unmistakably autobiographical account of the author's own gruesome experiences in Nazi Germany's death camps. Told through the eyes of 14-year-old Eliezer, the tragic fate of the Jews from the little town of Sighet unfolds with a heart-wrenching inevitability. Even as they are stuffed into cattle cars bound for Auschwitz, the townspeople refuse to believe rumors of anti-Semitic atrocities. Not until they are marched toward the blazing crematory at the camp's "reception center" does the terrible truth sink in.
Recounting the evils at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Wiesel's enduring classic of Holocaust literature raises questions of continuing significance for all future generations: How could man commit these horrors, and could such an evil ever be repeated?

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic - a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building.

During World War II a community called Manzanar was hastily created in the high mountain desert country of California, east of the Sierras. Its purpose was to house thousands of Japanese-American internees. One of the first families to arrive was the Wakatsukis, who were ordered to leave their fishing business in Long Beach and take with them only the belongings they could carry. For Jeanne Wakatsuki, a seven-year-old child, Manzanar became a way of life in which she struggled and adapted, observed and grew. For her father it was essentially the end of his life.

Reseñas de la Crítica
"Elie Wiesel’s memoir of life in the Nazi death camps has been reissued with a new translation by Wiesel’s wife, Marion. Read by George Guidall, this new edition is a brilliant and haunting reminder of these horrific crimes, as well as a testament to Wiesel’s faith and resilience. Guidall is the ideal reader, and gives yet another masterful performance. Every word Guidall utters reminds the listener of the fear, the suffering, and the hatred Wiesel witnessed and experienced as he drew upon his every instinct to fight for survival. The audio edition also contains a new preface by Wiesel, as well as Guidall’s performance of Wiesel’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. NIGHT is already a classic, and this audio edition is a superb complement to the text. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award." (AudioFile magazine)
"[A] slim volume of terrifying power." (The New York Times)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Written with remarkable insight and raw emotion, The Long Night paints a portrait of human psychology in the darkest of times. Bornstein tells the stories of those who did all they could do to withstand physical and psychological torture, starvation, and sickness, and openly describes those who were forced to inflict suffering on others.

Historia
On March 25, 1942, nearly a thousand young, unmarried Jewish women boarded a train in Poprad, Slovakia. Filled with a sense of adventure and national pride, they left their parents' homes wearing their best clothes and confidently waving good-bye. Believing they were going to work in a factory for a few months, they were eager to report for government service. Instead, the young women - many of them teenagers - were sent to Auschwitz. Their government paid 500 Reich Marks (about $200) apiece for Nazis to take them as slave labor. Of those 999 innocent deportees, only a few survived.

Historia
From a multitude of sources, Elie Wiesel culls facts, legends, and anecdotes to give us fascinating portraits of notable figures throughout Jewish history. Here is the prophet Elisha, wonder-worker and adviser to kings, whose compassion for those in need is matched only by his fiery temper. Here is the renowned scholar Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai, whose ingenuity in escaping from a besieged Jerusalem on the eve of its destruction by Roman legions in 70 CE laid the foundation for the rabbinic teachings and commentaries that revolutionized the practice and study of Judaism.

Historia
Quickly becoming a cornerstone of Holocaust historiography, this is a devastatingly stark memoir from one of the lone survivors of Treblinka. Why do some live while so many others perish? Tiny children, old men, beautiful girls - in the gas chambers of Treblinka, all are equal. The Nazis kept the fires of Treblinka burning night and day, a central cog in the wheel of the Final Solution.

Historia

Historia
April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz.

Historia
Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic - a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building.

Little yellow stars.
If wearing a yellow star is not lethal, of what then father did you die? This question is the crux of this penetating memoir of the nightmare we call the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel's Night, is a memoir that blurs the lines between chronicle, and novel. Wiesel use the night as a metaphor to describe his ordeal as young boy whose family and culture are uprooted and plunged into the nightmare of Auschwitz. It is a story of a surreal existence, suffering, deprivation, and despair. Through Elies eyes, we witness babies being murdered, men being executed, and the death of God Himself. While the rest of the world remained silent. (You must appreciate the fact that during and immediately after the war, the Holocaust was not a popular topic as it is today.) This book is so unnerving, the reader compelled to respond. This book will not just entertain, it will not just inform, it will provoke you into thinking about humanity in ways no other book will. Let Elie Wiesel shake you up out of your sleep, and show you why you must listen, and why you must act, to make sure the Holocaust never happens again.

Very Good
I bought this more because of it being an Oprah's choice than really "wanting" to read about this topic. Her suggestions are excellent, and this one was no different. This is an important subject and it is good to be reminded of past atrocities, so they hopefully will not be repeated in the future.
Certainly the author did an excellent job of conveying his experiences. Some of the content is so subtle, I had to "rewind" to hear it again to make sure I heard it correctly. The narrator did a wonderful job. His inflections fit the emotion of the scenes perfectly.
The material is not new, nor does it bring about any different perspective. But it is significant. This should be on a required reading list in everyone's life.

Missed Opportunity...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a unique opportunity to read a first-hand account of what went on.
What other book might you compare Night to and why?
One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a similar book I found more interesting. You get a first-hand account of a Russian Goulag. I think that was a better read. The author goes into exceptional detail placing you there along with him.
Any additional comments?
I was a little disappointed in the book. I felt Elie Wiesel had a real opportunity to share much more than he did. I think it took a lot of courage to write what he did, but the book comes off a bit shallow to me. He almost speaks of the events he went through as though he’s giving a play by play account of his ordeal. I wish he had provided more insight to his feelings toward religion, his fellow man, his survival instincts, his ethics, morals. I suspect, if you were to go through something such as Mr Wiesel did, you would question and analyze everything you believed. He opened up a little bit, but I wanted to know much more. You can now get very good accounts of what happened on cable.

Poignant story about a holocaust survivor
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it was well written and narrated and gripping story told from the first person view of a holocaust survivor.
What did you like best about this story?
The details of what it was like to live in a concentration camp.
Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, listening to all the Craig Johnson/Walt Longmire books, This is how I discovered George Guidall and I am keen to listen to all his other books.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, nothing extreme, but was hard to "put it down." It's a short listen, 4 hours, and worth every minute.
Any additional comments?
I'm always fascinated by people overcoming the most tragic of circumstances, but they can be tough to listen to as they can be depressing, but I enjoyed this book. It was gripping but always sad knowing that humanity can be so cruel to one another. It was inspiring to hear how Wiesel overcame the hardship of the labor camp. A couple of other great books to listen to (or read) about the holocaust is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and Schindler's List by Thomas Keanelly. These three books will always stay with me in the back of my mind as an inspiration for overcoming the worst of human conditions.

Incredible story!
Where does Night rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This one is at the top of my list, mostly because it is a first-hand account of what happened.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Night?
There are so many points that come to mind. After everything I have learned about the holocost and even after listening to this book, I still cannot understand how this happened...or, rather, how this was allowed to happen to so many people for no reason whatsoever.
What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?
George Guidall is an amazing narrator. I appreciate that he used the proper intonations; especially when speaking Hebrew.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I cried numerous times while listening to this book, which is difficult for me because I listen while commuting to and from work!
Any additional comments?
This is story that will need to be told forever -- over and over again, so history can never repeat itself. I feel terrible when I think about the countless number of people who had to endure this, but I am thankful that Elie Wiesel had the courage to share this with the world.

moving and devastating
Any additional comments?
This was a devastating and enlightening book. Elie Wiesel's story about his time in a concentration camp, the loss of his family, and his loyalty to them until the end, was heartbreaking. What made this story unique was how many questions were raised about how people live through such suffering. The most interesting question that was woven into this book was: how do people who believe in God, and whose lives revolve around their belief in God, understand the holocaust? How does someone in a concentration camp lose the ones they love, and live through such brutality and suffering, continue to believe in God?

Reguired Reading
I was a child born in the 30's, my Dad served in WWII and all my life I have been proud of what this nation did to bring that war to an end. I have always known the story of the persecution of the Jews and the Holocust but it was not until I listened to this book that I truly experienced the horror and I can only imagine. To have lived through it seems almost impossible to me. Great book, great author and great narrator. This book should be required reading for every high school student in this country. This story and sad moment in history must never be forgotten.

Brilliant Night!
Night, by Elie Wiesel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is great book to read. His words are gentle, but he speaks of destiny, cruelty, disease, death. The ignorance about the diabolic nazi, the ghetto, the deportation, the cattle car, the starvation, the injustice, are still ringing in my ears, as well as to many who had read the book. I've got in touch with the book when I was a naive teen, but the audible version is much, much better.
The narration by George Guidall, at first sounded strange, hard to listen, but, when I got accustumed I reconsidered, and thought that it fitted just right with the gloomy atmosphere of the story.
The crude reality of a tragic war told by a gifted writer, and very much worth listening and never forgotten.
