Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestseller Lisa Gardner returns with an unpredictable thriller that puts fan favorites D. D. Warren and Flora Dane on a shocking new case that begins with a vicious murder and gets darker from there.

A man is dead, shot three times in his home office. But his computer has been shot twelve times, and when the cops arrive, his pregnant wife is holding the gun.

D. D. Warren arrives on the scene and recognizes the woman - Evie Carter - from a case many years back. Evie's father was killed in a shooting that was ruled an accident. But for D.D., two coincidental murders is too many.

Flora Dane sees the murder of Conrad Carter on the TV news and immediately knows his face. She remembers a night when she was still a victim - a hostage - and her captor knew this man. Overcome with guilt that she never tracked him down, Flora is now determined to learn the truth of Conrad's murder.

But D.D. and Flora are about to discover that in this case the truth is a devilishly elusive thing. As layer by layer they peel away the half-truths and outright lies, they wonder: How many secrets can one family have?

Critic reviews

“Gardner knows how to weave a deeply moving and psychological thriller that pulls no punches in its authenticity. She is one of the masters when it comes to crime fiction. Fans of her novels will consider this one of her best, and newcomers will be in awe of the compelling story and unpredictability of the proceedings.” (Associated Press)

“This is easily Gardner’s most ambitious, complex tale ever, a shattering emotional journey that’s utterly relentless in pacing and suspense. Tell everyone that Never Tell is an early candidate for the best thriller of 2019.” (Providence Journal)

“Nailbiting.... Gardner’s commendable storytelling will keep fans eagerly waiting for the next outing for D.D. and Flora.” (Publishers Weekly)

Excellent DD Warren murder mystery

Another intricately plotted, murder crime-fiction with three excellent MCs: Detective DD Warren, her confidential informant Flora Dane, and new character Evie Carter, who’s suspected of killing her husband. The characters are what keeps me reading this series, and this one has several very complicated newbies, who add layers to the book. I also liked the brief but light glimpses into DD Warren’s personal life—especially her active, young son and his rambunctious puppy.
I listened to the Audible version and liked the narrator—but I didn’t love her voice-acting. I docked a star for narration, but overall, this book deserves 5 stars.
Recommended read—or audiobook listen—for crime fiction fans.

What a twist!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and liked that it wasn’t predictable. After reading this and one previous book by Lisa Gardner, Flora Dane is one of my favorite characters. This one’s definitely worth a credit!

With D.D. Warren It's Never What It Seems

I love Flora Dane. "Find Her" is mind-blowing. I've grown to like D.D. Warren, "Fear Nothing" is intricately plotted and amazing. The two together should be fabulous. They're not always. "Look for Me" was rather blah. "Never Tell" starts up gangbusters. A pregnant wife comes home to find her husband shot to death in front of his computer. She takes the gun and pumps even more bullets into the computer. Enter hardass D.D. Warren. She's determined to nail the wife, especially because the woman got off on the shotgun death of her father years before when D.D. was just starting out. Enter Flora Dane -- she sees a picture of the murdered husband on the news and recognizes him -- a man her captor almost GAVE HER TO, a plan she thwarted by overeating (starved to a skeleton) and drinking until she barfs in a parking lot, repulsing her possible new owner. SHE FEARED THE OTHER MAN MORE THAN SHE FEARED HER LONGTERM CAPTOR AND ABUSER.
A year after I started this book I couldn't remember the ending, which was very odd. I discovered I'd been sidetracked onto another book (I always read Eve Dallas books when I'm making my annual 12 hour cartrip to see a specialist, and when I got home I just continued with Eve and completely forgot about having started this book! When I racked my brain for the ending and couldn't remember, I restarted the book, only to discover I'd stopped reading not far in! What a treasure to rediscover! It was GREAT! Flora is willing to risk herself to help bring back even the bodies of other missing girls. Toward this end, she accepts an oft-repeated invitation to meet Keith Edgar, a true crime buff who's made a special study of Jacob Ness, the monster who kidnapped Flora and held her prisoner. He's a very interesting addition to the cast. Is he himself another monster like those he studies? Will he hurt Flora? He seems her opposite -- well-off, well-dressed versus her pizza shop job and thrift store wardrobe. But a woman can be hurt in many ways -- even if he isn't the serial killer Flora fears (and I fear!), he could still hurt her emotionally...
YOWZA this is a great book!

Great story / deeply driven characters

Kirsten Potter absolutely brings this book to life. I enjoyed the writing, story and depth of character. The subject matter, trauma response and police procedure seemed authentic.
