Publisher's Summary

The amazing and blessed life of popular ESPN reporter and correspondent for College GameDay Marty Smith, whose mission in this thoughtful and funny memoir is to return fans to the true soul of sports in this country.

You know Marty, right? The guy during College GameDay hanging off the back of a pickup truck while zooming around the Clemson athletic facilities. The guy who visits Nick Saban's lake house and somehow gets Coach to jump in the lake. The guy who sits down with Dale, Jr., at Daytona to talk through tears about his miraculous return to racing. The guy who interviews Tiger Woods, Tim Tebow, Peyton Manning, and Jimmie Johnson - the guy who gets paid to live the fantasy of every sports fan in America.

Never Settle is the funny but oh, it's true story of how Marty got here, and a revealing look at his journey. Never Settle includes all the best stories and behind-the-scenes moments from Marty's wild life, covering topics including: college football, racing, fathers and sons, how sports can bring us together, and how it all goes back to growing up on a farm and playing high school ball in Pearisburg, Virginia.

Critic Reviews

"Marty Smith is fantastic! The thing I really admire is his passion and enthusiasm. Marty is engaged the whole time - he hustles and gets involved emotionally in the stories he tells. He's a great professional, great for college football, and I just have a great admiration for him." (Jim Harbaugh, head football coach, University of Michigan)

"Marty Smith's gift exceeds his power to connect with those he chronicles. For through that connection, with people famous and obscure, with some of the biggest names in sports and others you've never heard of, he conjures moments universal and intimate. This is a book of uncommon humanity - shaped by stories, including Marty's own - rendered in a voice as pure as the soil where it was nurtured." (Tom Rinaldi, national ESPN correspondent and New York Times best-selling author of The Red Bandanna)

"I've known Marty for what seems like our entire lives. He's an extremely hard worker. He's full of life. He's the friend everyone hopes to have. His life's been an incredible journey, and within the pages of Never Settle, you're along for the ride." (Dale Earnhardt, Jr., two-time Daytona 500 champion and New York Times best-selling author of Racing to the Finish)

Authentic American

Loved to hear Marty do a feature story on Marty and his journey to be a man of character while telling stories of those sports figures we all cheer for or against.

Marty Smith did an amazing job with this book

This was literally the first time I used this app, and honestly this is the first book I have read/listened to since I graduated high school almost nineteen years ago 🤦🏼‍♂️. Marty did an amazing job on this audiobook, the passion he has for his family, job and life came out so clearly through his words. I am so thankful that I didn’t read the book and I allowed myself to hear the stories through his voice. I drive a big truck for a living, and got to listen to him for a hour or so throughout the past few weeks, it made the time really fly by. I kind of had a lot in common with Marty, I lost my father at the age of nineteen, and there is so much of my adult life I would have loved to for my father to been here with me to see. The way Marty said I believe it was “ he idolized his father, but he adored his mother” is the same way I feel about my parents. For the most part, this book was done so well in my opinion because the way he really connects with the people he interviews. Any sports fan, or someone struggling with their way of life can connect with him. All and all I believe this book can help people have hope and to realize anything is possible if you’re willing to do the work. I wish there was a way I could possibly thank Marty, I guess buying the book is a way, but I’d like to shake his hand and say thank you. Maybe he will read this, you did a fantastic job Marty

Amazing stories told by an amazing storyteller

Marty Smith blew me away in this book. He feels like a lifelong best friend now that I’ve finished the book. A vacuum has already formed as the realization has set in that Marty and his stories won’t be accompanying me any longer on my upcoming drives. What a journey!

Never. Settle.

Marty Smith triggers emotions that lay dormant with this touching and heartfelt book. For those, that aren’t sports fans. Read it! Sports are the conduit used to paint a bigger picture of ones self that all can relate. His recounts of interviews and personal antics maintain your engagement while bringing tears at times. I’d recommend this to anyone who is looking for an honest worthwhile read or listen.

Must Read

Knowledge is power and I am a better husband, father and leader for making this investment. Living in the Charlotte community I often thought it would be cool to hang out with Marty and that is what this felt like as he pulled back the curtain on life, it’s lessons and it’s characters. I have highly recommended this to friends and family. Thank you Marty! Kirk Reed
