Publisher's summary

A self-anointed spinster at 51, Myra Lipinski is reasonably content with her quiet life, her dog, Frank, and her career as a visiting nurse. But everything changes when Chip Reardon, the golden boy she adored in high school, is assigned as her new patient. Choosing to forgo treatment for an incurable illness, Chip has returned to his New England hometown to spend what time he has left. Now, Myra and Chip find themselves engaged in a poignant redefinition of roles, and a complicated dance of memory, ambivalence, and longing.

So so so beautiful!

Wow. I sort of stumbled upon this one and thought I’d enjoy it. I’ve been on a bit of a “kick” with books pertaining to the elderly, or characters reflecting on lives lived, life in the form of memory I guess. This wasn’t quite exactly that. In fact this was more of a reminder of how absolutely brilliant life is in the moment. Day to day, hour to hour/minute to minute even. The book was perfectly paced, never lost me at any point and the supporting characters were some of the best I’ve ever spent time with! I am looking forward to cracking open a lot more of Elizabeth’s work! This was def a book I couldn’t stop once I was hooked into the story. And I was waist-deep pretty early! She did such an amazing job of telling many folks different feelings thru the characters while keeping you grounded to how the main character thought about each individual. It was as if you were along for her stops as a visiting nurse. This life is made up of so many different people at different points in their lives, feeling different emotions, going thru different things. Good and bad. It made me think about the best things of life and took me into the deeper waters of the most frightening possibilities. It’s written so real, so perfectly, and with such easy detail that it plays out before you on the page just as fluidly as a life does in its everyday fashion. At times funny, sad, exciting, lonely, embarrassing, longing, regret, frightening, joyful, angry, hard, dreamily, loving.....all of it. What a great book. One I will hold dear. I’m overjoyed to have discovered her work! The only reason I didn’t give 5-stars across the board is (minor spoiler...)because of how “certain characters time ended” wink wink wink. Personally I didn’t like seeing that choice made. I don’t agree with it and it makes me a bit uncomfortable. But hey, it wasn’t my book to write! Right?!. Lol. Otherwise...I already miss going on those visits to each patients house and experiencing the pleasantries, the empathy, and even the hard parts those that’re sick can present. My wife is a nurse, and this book made me even prouder of her than I already am. Spend some time with this novel, I can’t see how you can and not be delighted.

Beautifully read and good story

I loved this book but the absolute icing on the cake was Elizabeth Berg's narration. Her voice is just calming and peaceful.

Never Change

As usual, I am dazzled. I wanted to say “4 stars” for the story because I found it difficult, but in the end, I realized that would be dishonest. Elizabeth Berg takes on the difficult parts of life, and makes you feel the joy and beauty in all of it, and the truth of how much we need each other. She just makes me happy and proud to be human.
