Publisher's summary

She is a recluse who speaks an unknown language, but Nell's actions teach a deeper knowledge of the human soul. Nell lives hidden away from civilization in a cabin seemingly ignored by time. Raised by a reclusive mother whose speech patterns were damaged by a series of strokes, Nell ingeniously develops her own language and a way of life that is all the more unique. The magic that drives her and the forces that suppress her are strong, and are only matched by one soul-searching doctor who discovers her in the forest and resolves to draw her out of her solitude. Together they find a common bond beyond language, revealing the powerful connections of the human heart. Jodie Foster's portrayal of Nell on the movie screen earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Heartwarming

Loved it. Even though I've seen the movie a few times, hearing it on audio books, brought the story to life for me again. A story of a young woman found alone in the countryside, speaking the language and lessons she'd learned from her recently deceased disabled mother. The challenges she faces, and the lessons she offers to the world beyond her own small world.
