Historia
Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father.

Historia
In her heralded first novel, Gloria Naylor weaves together the stories of seven women living in Brewster Place, a bleak-inner city sanctuary, creating a powerful, moving portrait of the strengths, struggles, and hopes of black women in America. Vulnerable and resilient, openhanded and openhearted, these women forge their lives in a place that in turn threatens and protects—a common prison and a shared home. Naylor renders both loving and painful human experiences with simple eloquence and uncommon intuition in this touching and unforgettable listen.

I really enjoyed this book. Sometimes it made me angry on the things they did, but I really enjoyed it. It takes all kinds of people to make this world, and all kinds of mothers are included in that group.

Neecey's Lullaby
One of the most excellent and soul stirring novels I've read in a long time!! It was emotionally draining at many times but I couldn't put it down! Told from the perspective of a young girl to womanhood, Neecey was an incredibly strong young lady, dealing with one of the worst mothers living or dead!! Bravo too the author for keeping it real, because it is an inspiration for anyone who ever suffered injustice and or abuse at the hands of those who are supposed to love and nurture you.
The narration was superb!

It was alright!
I enjoyed the reading but there is something that is missing. I understand the author is telling the story of a little girl that was forced to be grown before her time, but......SPOILER!!!! But there was never a reason why the mom acted the way she did. Most of the characters identities were never revealed so I could not get a real connection.
I feel that the writer could have done a better job pulling the story line together to help the audience. Not sure I would recommend this book!
