Astounding history, riveting performance

Middle- and high schools throughout the nation should teach this book. And for adults like me who didn't know Douglass wrote an autobiography, this is a vivid, eye-opening testimony of the perverse, inhumane institution of American slavery. Narrator Bill Andrew Quinn gives a spot-on performance of this book, perfect for the 19th century writing style. If you don't know this bit of history about the childhood slavery of one of America's most famous abolitionists, you should listen to this.

Must read, such a moving eloquent story.

So hard to understand how this intelligent well spoken man was ever considered anyone’s slave, his perceptions of the wrong done to him and many others rips at your gut and you feel a bond with him in his evil predicament.

United States of America, hear me now

This autobiography there’s a significant part of American history. It is a document of an eyewitness of his experience of slavery during his own lifetime. To come back to ignorance of slavery his narrative should be taught in schools across the United States as curriculums. Education is the only way to combat racial ignorance

Gripping, enlightening never to be forgotten

I couldn't put this fascinating and intriguing tale down. From start to finish, I felt connected to the characters, helped along by the narration of Andrew Quinn. It is a painful look back at our history, especially for those who are not afraid to seeking the truth of man's quest for emancipation.

Short but interesting

Very interesting booking, something I’d been meaning to get to for some time. Great story, which could be adapted into a great series.

Belated discovery of a classic for me

Beautifully read. Eloquent prose. Maybe I’ve been to focused on Western Europe to appreciate classics from USA; so far away & alien! I’m glad I found this book.
It’s scary that it’s not that long ago - he died in the lifetime of my great grandparents (who had hard lives too but weren’t slaves.)

A clear and humbling read

As I watch the news of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations following the terrible death of George Floyd, and see the slave trader statue pulled down in Bristol, I am ashamed to say I don’t really know he history of the Slave Trade, I have never been clear on which history books would give the best record of his dreadful time. Frederick Douglas was a slave in America from birth. His book is clear and almost matter of fact, it’s not angry, and ranting it’s a beautifully written personal history of one man’s life. I was the angry one in parts, but will read it again and again to ensure I get the full understanding of the various situations he lived through.

I can’t recommend it enough.

Thank you Audible.

Superb in every way

Superb performance of one of the most important books in the canon of American literature. This is an astonishing book about human depravity and the most basic survival, told by one of the finest writers in American literature. A must-read -- and as far as audiobooks go, a must-listen.
