Story
But It’s Your Family is a remarkable account of what it means to cut ties to toxic family abuse and thrive in the aftermath. Loving someone doesn’t always mean having a relationship with them, just like forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. Reconciling, in many cases, only sets people up for more abuse. A significant part of healing comes with accepting that this is a part of life; there are some relationships that are so poisonous that they destroy one’s ability to be healthy and function best.

Story
Those who have had a narcissistic parent can testify to how damaging it can be to one's psyche. Narcissistic parents lack empathy, show a severe sense of entitlement to micromanage the lives of their children, and often subject their children to neglect, as well as emotional, psychological, and physical abuse. From the unique challenges daughters of narcissistic fathers face to the ways in which adverse childhood experiences affect our brains, Shahida Arabi's insightful essays resonate deeply with those who have been raised by narcissistic parents.

Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Publisher's summary
If you are an adult child of a narcissistic mother, this audiobook is for you, and if you are not sure whether your abusive mother is a pathological narcissist, you will find out.
If you listen to this audiobook:
- You will become aware of all the reasons why your childhood was so traumatic.
- You will learn how to deal with your narcissistic mother without being her victim any longer.
- You will find out all dysfunctional beliefs and habits that you developed during your childhood.
- You will learn how to contrast Complex Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms.
The issue of toxic mothers challenges the status quo in so many ways but does need to be addressed. Adult children of narcissistic parents are often plagued with so much guilt and sense of deep obligation and shame that they feel duty-bound to keep whatever happened in the family secret, even when it is shredding their lives. It’s really difficult to share your experience because narcissists, and especially a narcissistic mother, can be very good at creating the perfect image of the family for outsiders.
The solution is not forgiving or forgetting, but understanding and working on your self-development, and finally taking back control of your life.
Even if you were born in the wrong place, growing up dealing with an abusive mother, you can leave the past behind and build a better future by taking control of your life. This audiobook is a painful path of awareness, but it is also the first step of a journey toward a better life.

A little victim-blamey in parts.
I was really enjoying this book until it got to a point (3.4) where the author blames victims of narc mothers for their feelings. She insists that we shouldn't let ourselves feel certain ways in response to things our narc mothers do. She says we feel the way we feel because we WANT to feel that way. "No one can make you feel anything you don't want to feel. You feel these things by choice." The book did validate to me that I have a narc mother, but I'll not finish the book after knowing the author believes our feelings are our fault.

STOP!!! SEARCH NO MORE! YOU FOUND THE ANSWER HERE!
I am thankful to have found this book! Anyone that deals with a narcissistic mother, you can find your answers right here! I have been struggling to just survive life due to my narc mother. I am better for listening to this book. I am a new human being and regained my strength! Here's why...
It helps to be able to have the bookmark and clip function to repeat the stubborn lessons I needed to learn and understand. I have gained a new education, awareness of the psychological traps, how to handle difficult arguments, and finally how to have my freedom and peace of mind. (I also lost 7lbs from releasing the stress in 4 days that I was building up - LOL!)
I encourage anyone who has an issue with Narcissists to read Caroline Foster. She's not like the rest giving a bunch of facts from studies at universities or confusing you with a bunch of medical terms. She identifies the problem and tell it exactly how it is! Most importantly she tells you what you need to do to save yourself!
Thank you, Caroline Foster. You saved my life at 46yrs old!!!
God bless you!

Not great
I was disappointed with the way in which the author is telling the reader specific things that are not research-based. For example, there is a section where the author says your parent never loved you as an infant. That is a bold statement that may not apply to the reader’s situation but if the reader is feeling disconnected with a family it could cause problems instead of helping find solutions. There are several such examples within this book. A reader needs to be guarded and be aware that everything the author says may not directly apply to their situation. Don’t waste your time.

Narrated by Siri's Narcissistic Robotic Mother
This book has good content, but is narrated by a robot that is emotionless that sounds like she could be Siri's narcissistic mother. It's pretty bad and annoying. Makes it hard to finish the book. I wish I would have read the book, rather than listen to it.

Great information; Insane over use of him/her
Very informative but the writer's approach of topics involves lots of examples containing gendering where gender in reality wouldn't matter or over using "he or she" type language, both to the points that it either gives the impression that the example is a gendered experience even when it isn't or that the he/she's simply over power the actual message. For this reason: this book requires multiple reads to understand what the base messages are but subsequently, these reads will be more painful than the last just for the fact of slogging through the clunky phrasing.
Letter to the author: singular they/them is 100% correct language that we have used for hundreds or years, in fact, you even used it once to describe to possessive nature of a narcissist to **their** children. In the end, it is just more pleasing to read and hear compared to he/she's and him/her's that detract from your intention.

Casually written
I did not finish this book. I found it bizarrely casually /poorly written from the get go. It's not very scholarly and sounds like someone who has not been formally educated on writing wrote it. I was hoping for a book with more meat and substance and this is just not it. The narration is also pretty bad which makes the poor writing stand out even worse.

Not worth the investment
This book reads like it was written by a resentful person. It’s not well researched or written. It seems based on the opinions of the author who is a life coach and not a trained clinician. It also sounds like it’s being read by a robot. Overall very disappointing.

Dangerous Advice
Very disappointed overall. This book is based on the opinions of one lady with no credentials or formal training in mental health or counseling. The only factual data is when the author quotes the DSM-5 manual. The rest is opinion and oversimplified advice on a very complex topic. No inclusion of facts, data or research. If you are the rare person dealing with someone with true narcissistic personality disorder I would not take advice from this book. Seek help or read a book from someone with actual education in this subject. Also the narration sounds like Siri and is very annoying.

Just in time live saving
After 20+ years of running away from my mother, time has come to go back to her as she needs more care. I was scared, stressed and depressed by the prospect. I was searching for help to survive this, and I found this book. It explains all the hurt, the frustration and the anger of me and my family. It gives useful advices. It gives me hope. I start to think that probably it’s not that there’s much wrong with me, but it’s what my mother put in my head. I wish I read this book much earlier, but better late than never.
Thank author for her life saving book and the narrator for her soothing voice. I’m sure this book will be my life line in the coming years whenever I’m desperate

Story
Helping a person with narcissism to heal is a challenging endeavor. You need to come up with a strategy to internalize and practice what you learn in this book. While you are working within this relationship, make sure you take care of yourself. This is important and requires respect for the model to work. Consult frequently. After each meeting, debrief. Exercise your health and well-being and take care of it. Do not customize the activities of narcissistic individuals.
