Torture x 6, really?
Not my favorite Koontz. I generally love Koontz for his interesting characters, family-of-choice dynamics, good dogs, good prose, good vocabulary, and stories that are interesting and make sense. Unfortunately. occasionally Koontz goes off the right-wing deep end. This is a series of shorts where bad guys get tortured to death for their crimes by a Nameless guy, who has chosen to remember no past, and a secretive organization with unlimited resources, who dispense "justice" when the law does not find guilt. The vigilantes are really pretty sure they are not mistaken, and spend a loads of money to torture the bad guys in really clever ways - what fun?
This is 6 short stories (so you hear the "protagonists" memory loss back story over and over again).
OK I have searched all my Koontz reviews....and this is the worst Koontz there is. This is a bit like finding an author you have respected is actually a real total, no holds barred, racist, and it is embarrassing you every said you liked anything that guy had ever written. So, is Koontz really totally losing it (at 80 which is excusable)? Or is he publishing "stuff" he once knew was totally reprehensible to make some money off it before he loses it completely (I guess also excusable)? When I just googled him it said he just sold his primo Newport Beach place today.
Anyway, re-read ANY KOONTZ and avoid this one unless you just want to throw an old guy a bone.
You can also throw him a bone by reading his best:

Koontz is finally back!!!
This was a whole new level of plot twist and it was great. That “female vigilante character who abandons her son and fights the world” series had me lose faith in Koontz’s ability to make a likable protagonist, and there was some weird jazz book that I just couldn’t stomach. It is so wonderful to have the familiar writings back. I am all for one exploring new ways of writing but to abandon devoted readers on ones quest is not just foolhardy but dangerous.
For those of you who loved all his former books I assure you, despite how “different” this one feels at first, you will NOT be disappointed.
This book ends perfectly where he can weave this character into other books, or even go back and fully explore any one of the “tales” touched on in this book. Even if he never uses this character again it would be fine because the ending did not leave one wanting.
Enjoy

Mostly Great Stories from Koontz
This book consists of half a dozen short stories which all evolve around a main central character, a sort of good guy vigilante (with the backing of a secret organisation) who dishes out death to different bad guy(s), in imaginative ways, in each of the separate story lines. The main character 'Nameless' has amnesia and has occasional visions, bringing the Koontz fantasy element to the stories.
This is the first thing i've read (or listened to) by Koontz for many years, after the general quality of his novels declined in the late 90s, have to say I found this set of stories to be very good, especially the first four stories (last two in my view weren't quite as good) which brought back memories of how good Koontz can be when he gets it right.
The narration was very good as well.

Cracking Series
Six books together in one. Namless is a man with no past, he has no name, he has no fingerprints. He uses various names for each assignment. Money is no object and everything is provided for him via a mysterious organization. His contact is someone who goes by the name The Ace of Diamonds. He hunts and passes sentence on people who have wronged but would never be prosecuted. He works for truth and justice. These stories are brilliantly narrated by Edwardo Ballerini. They also come as separate novellas, I'm glad Koontz decided to put them all together. A very enjoyable read, my only wish is that the stories were longer.

Meh, repetitive
To be honest, I find that with the exception of Watchers most of Koontz work to be lazy and sloppy with frustratingly rushed endings. The main reason I gave this a shot was because Edoardo Ballerini is easily one of the best narrators contributing to Audbile, sadly his performance was the only saving grace from an otherwise repetitive and boring anthology.
Dean Koontz fanatics will most likely enjoy this which would explain the high ratings.

collection of shorts, not one narrative
these little episodes were good, but the constant repetition of the introductory elements was tiresome.
it was a little bit like a 'monster of the week' tv show. which is fine but not what I was expecting when I downloaded it.
the narrator was great and character concept was fun I thought.
