The book is nothing like the movie which is exciting in many ways because I had no idea what was going to happen, sadly the book takes way way WAY too much time on Japanese culture before it gets to Bonds true mission. I did thoroughly enjoy experiencing Bonds softer side and the climax was excellent just be aware it has its short comings.
This is my 12th book of Fleming's Bond series and my favorite. I was born and raised in Japan, and most books and movies that take place in Japan annoy me because the country and the culture are almost always inaccurately depicted. This book is different. Except for the amas swimming naked, descriptions are accurate and not exaggerated. I wonder if Fleming lived in Japan for a while.
Would you listen to You Only Live Twice again? Why?
The book has so many interesting aspects and themes to it, I would certainly listen to it again.
What was one of the most memorable moments of You Only Live Twice?
The final showdown with Blofeld is classic Bond and classic Fleming.
What does Martin Jarvis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Martin Jarvis really puts in a superb performance. His rendition of Tiger Tanaka is as good as it gets.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Bond visiting the stone pedestal bodies prior to the showdown at the castle, and the reading of Bond's obituary.
Any additional comments?
It's not the best best Fleming Bond novel, but it is part of the classic Blofeld/SPECTRE trilogy and is still highly enjoyable. The narrator really does a good job with this.
The narrator is better than on the generic audible recordings, but I was not pleased with his Bond voice, it felt to old.
