Publisher's summary

Minding his own business is what Mac Travis does best until a strong storm coupled with a king tide brings dead fish to his doorstep. Mac investigates the cause, discovering a murder and wreck at a testing station in Florida Bay. The trail leads him deep into the backcountry of the Florida Keys where he uncovers a plan that could lead to the destruction of the Everglades. Along with Mel and Trufante, he sets out to save the ecosystem but soon becomes embroiled in the politics and power of Big Sugar.

Wood's Revenge is a gripping standalone adventure thriller in Steven Becker's best-selling Mac Travis series. Centered around South Florida and the Florida Keys, Becker's books feature plenty of Keys counter-culture along with SCUBA diving, boating, and fishing.

my favorite by far

I have to say this was my favorite of the Mac Travis series. I have to give kudos to Becker. Often a series will start to drag or just run out of steam. That hasn't happened here at all. Wood's Revenge has Mac, Mel and their entourage of interesting characters taking on the sugar industry. This bit of realism is definitely not preachy. It's just informative enough that it adds to the story. It was especially interesting to me as some of the past events described impacted my life.

This opens up with us finding out that Wood's off-grid island was repaired (Yay!) and is now being lived in by Mac and Mel (at least part-time for Mel). Trufante and Pamela are living life as only they can. Each time I start one of these books and the Cajun Trufante enters the picture, I have to grin. Trufante wants to take care of Pamela so he takes on a job that he shouldn't. Yes, this is nothing new for Trufante but this job opens up Mac and Mel's eyes to how the poor practices within the sugar industry are affecting the ecosystem. I love that we see Mel in her element as an activist lawyer. The Venn diagram of how the sugar industry, fishing and Mac's home all overlap is explored with great writing by Steven Becker.

Steven Becker and Paul J. McSorley are a great combination. If like me, you've progressed this far through the audiobook series then you'll appreciate the consistency of McSorley's character voices. He narrates all of Becker's books and the two of them are a great combination.

One of the best

The author does a fabulous job tying in a major real world problem affecting the Everglades and surrounded ecosystems keeping it exciting enough to keep you hooked, but factual enough to paint the reality.
