Great Sci-fi Adventure

Normally I do not like to listen to a series since it takes a great deal of time.

But sometimes you have an opportunity to consume a creative and interesting story with characters that you care about.

The vision of our future and the fear that Computers and or its offshoots Robots or Androids or AI beings will run amok and endanger Earth or the entire Cosmos is of course nothing new.

But this Author and the various stories embedded in this series have its own unique take on this forbidding future many of us
fear.

In other words enjoy this series from a South African Narrator and Writer who know a thing or two about futures that go wrong.

A great sci-fi series

This is a great sci-fi series set in a near future South Africa, that infuses everything from LitRPGs to corporate espionage. While the entire series tells a story over a large span of time, each book does something completely different. You get to have these characters you enjoy basically experience three different sci-fi genres while all tieing into an overall story. The world building is great, and the characters are fleshed out and it is thoroughly captivating to blast through this series.

The narration by Roshina Ratnam is great. Her voices and accents help transport you and help you experience the characters emotions. She does a great job throughout the whole series, and I hope she and JT Lawrence can work together again.

Loved the series, and hopefully, we get some more shorts (especially any involving Keke). An imaginative and thoroughly entertaining series.

Really great trilogy

When I began the trilogy it took me a little while to get into the first book Why You Were Taken. I'm not sure what threw me off whether it was the pacing, or the structure of journal entry to fast forward future of whats happening on the story or the accent from Roshina Ratnam which she does an incredible job by the way but something in the beginning didn't click for me. As the story progressed and the characters got more developed I was immediately glad I stuck with it. This is a very unique sci-fi story about a not too distant future. I was not a fan of the protagonist Kate at first and specially in the beginning of the second book How We Found You but as her story kept on and she grew more into her full character I was a fan. All the other characters like Seth and Keke I liked far better however. This trilogy is very good and as I said before I'm glad I stuck with it and I will be looking for more work from JT Lawrence and Roshina Ratnam in the future. I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

A definite must read

Loved this series, it keeps you hooked right till the end. The characters draw you in to their lives so you have the same fears and hopes they do. The writing is futuristic but believable. The narrator is brilliant with the different accents, and keeping your attention. The twists and turns mean that you are never bored, there is always something happening and the last twist, I definitely didn't see coming. I really hope there is another book coming...

Head trip anyone?!?

I will review all 3 books as a whole. I had a hard time getting into the story at first. I couldnt concentrate with the jumping back and forth between so many different players. Once things started to mesh together some, it became MUCH better for me. After a couple hours and I was really able to get into the series, I had such a hard time stopping! I would lose sleep just to stay up later and listen longer. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, the author through in a huge left turn. I loved it! It kept me on my toes every second. Major props to the author for having that ability. I seriously hope there are more books!!

Unbelievably amazing!

I listened to Why You Were Taken some time ago and when the boxed set became available jumped at the chance. Unbelievably amazing stories! They are all different enough to not get boring and stand alone yet they are intertwined and connected in masterful ways, twists turns, adventure, just amazing. The narration is stellar, on of the best narrators I’v heard, accent is amazing and she really draws you in. High praise and top marks for both author and narrator. There better be more books to come!!!!! I received a free review copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily left this review! Thank you!

Different from my norm, but good!

This is an incredibly different story. I wasn’t sure, to be honest, about these books but I’m glad I took a chance on them. A story based in the near future with a dystopian meets thriller kind of genre is not one I generally seek out, let along listen to three books and review. But, like I said, I took at chance and found an interest and great enjoyment in a different type of story set in Africa

The building of this story was incredible. I was really happy to see that the audiobooks come in the three pack and you can gorge yourself on the entire series. What I really enjoy was that each book felt like its own while still being a part of a hole larger story. The characters were fantastic! JT Lawrence was really creative with every aspect of these books.

This was my first audiobook with Roshina Ratnam as a narrator. I really enjoyed the south African-type accent. She did a wonderful job building the story up and giving the characters feeling and personalization.

Marvellous sci-fi thriller

I am really pleased with this series. As a South African, the book hit very close to home for me and I enjoyed the vernacular and the pronunciation of the narrator tremendously. The first book feels like a thriller with the sci-fi components being incidental, but the dystopian outlook and futuristic science becomes more and more important as the series progresses. I really cannot praise this series of books enough. It's really tremendously well-written and imagined. The only criticism that I have is that the narrator doesn't have a great many voices, but I can forgive that with how well she did otherwise. I will be keeping an eye on JT Lawrence and I believe that I have found a new author that I know I will enjoy. Please note that this book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review, however I would not have changed a single word of my review if I had paid for it. Thank you for an enjoyable ride, author.

Loved this series!

This series is excellent! Each book stands on it's own and the author does a fantastic job of 'reminding' you of what happened in the past books. I couldn't imagine living in the world that is created here, but the author does a really good job of describing not only the actual way of life, but how each character deals with it. Only odd thing I found is that it is set in the not too distant future. I just don't see that happening in the next couple of years, but...it IS JT Lawrence's imagination, not mine. I listened to the audiobook version of this boxed set. I LOVE Roshina Ratnam's voice. She has a fantastic way of keeping the flow of the story and the characters interesting. She is talent, pure and simple.

Fabulous

I absolutely loved this! 27 hours & 3 books. It just flew through. Non stop something was going on.
The characters were so full and living, so real that I got hooked on them & what was going on with them.
The 1st book led us in & caught up with the lives and start of the happenings.
The 2nd book just hooked me so much I was desperate by the end of it to get onto the 3rd.
The 3rd...wow. It was the best and so much happened that I couldn’t believe it all fit in if I’m honest!
No spoilers from me but the ending was just What?! It’s a great set of books & so worth it’s price and time to listen to it.
I will be listening again and if anyone does read this review who could make things happen, this would be a fab movie!
Action packed and such a good story line throughout.

A great tale of intrigue and power plays

I listened to all three of these books in record time I think! The overall idea for the book is very believable, you could see our near future turning out like this - a bit Blade Runner, a bit leftover 21st C -type racism, politics and big business all wrapped up in Illuminati-type control conspiracies, fueling fears and divisions for financial gain, religious fanatics with a grain of insight mixed up into obsession...but could they know something we don't?

It's a long listen - there are bits where there's a lot of background story, which was also well written. My preference is for a little less of this, but it certainly didn't stop me listening - hint, it's all relevant to the story.

The listen is very easy though - the narrator is excellent and has just enough of an 'exotic' South African accent to lend intrigue to the story. Loved the use of slang and the lead character's synesthesia - these were woven into the story really, really well and brought in wonderful visualisations.

It's written from the female POV, but with plenty of male POV in their too. Good strong characters you can root for and identify with as well as ones you wish you too could pick up a virtual diamond-tipped arrow and get involved in the action with.

So when I finally reached the end of book 3, I'm left thinking "OK! So where's the next trilogy?!?" I received a free copy of the books to give an honest review and I can say I really enjoyed them all - I'll be on the lookout to buy others in the series

Step into tomorrow's Joburg on a global scale

I loved listening to this collection.

Set in the futuristic, dystopian landscape of Johannesburg - thriving metropolis and melting pot of South Africa - JT Lawrence blends the new and sparkling advancements of the future she's imagined with the familiar, grounding elements that anchored me to the present day. In this world, the world of tomorrow, our deep-rooted problems are still very much in evidence. Infertility, chronic diseases, mental illness, undrinkable water - check. Fear of AI rebellion? Oh, yes.

Boredom factor? zilch. Suspense? 110%. Enjoyment? Absolute.

In short, this boxset is an amazing bargain. Start listening today!

Twist! Mild spoiler within

I was given this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

I had already read and reviewed books 1&2 so started listening when book 3 began.

At the start this seemed to jump around a little but soon settled into its pace. I was NOT expecting that ending, that totally floored me! I can usually spot a twist coming so have to applaud this one. Well written, well narrated, thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you.
