Publisher's Summary

Sam Morpeth is left to fend for her younger sister when their mother goes to prison. But when a stranger begins to blackmail her online, she's drawn her into a trap she may not escape alive.

Reporter Jack Parlabane is indebted to a volatile source, and now that debt is being called in, it could cost him everything. Thrown together by a common enemy, Sam and Jack are about to discover they have more in common than they realise - and might be each other's only hope.

Want You Gone is the superb new psychological thriller in the best-selling Jack Parlabane series. Award-winning best seller Chris Brookmyre is at his best yet with this nail-biting story.

"Clever but really an utter bore?"

Others will love and I can't help admiring the skill and intelligence of the author, but really? Obvious that the writer has done his homework ... feels like an old guy getting down with the kids! Tedious.

    "Gripping Listen"

Listened to most Brookmyre Parlobane stories and enjoyed them all. This one's right up to date and the interaction between the two main characters and their dedicated narrators is a master touch which I was initially a bit suspicious and unsure of, however, turned out great. I do like unabridged versions of my books, but sometimes Brookmyre can ramble on a wee bit far with detailed background, this book appears to have dispensed with this trend. Thanks, a great listen.

    "Best Brookmyre in a while"

While I have enjoyed every Christopher Brookmyre book I have read, none have lived up to the first one (in my case all 'fun and games until somebody loses an eye') Until now. This was a great story expertly told and read. It kept me guessing until the end and kept me on the edge of the seat the whole way through. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you have never read any Christopher Brookmyre before this, be prepared for a treat as you go back through all of his back catalogue. You will want more...

Starts off at great pace but ends up with lots of exposition rather than action.

"One of the best Brookmyre books for years"
What made the experience of listening to Want You Gone the most enjoyable?

Computer hacking is not a topic I know much about and although there is a degree of technicality, I was not lost as anything relevant is 'explained to Jack' for the reader's benefit. This keeps the pace quite high and the story deep without having to be a nerd to follow it.

What other book might you compare Want You Gone to, and why?

Parlabane is nearly back to his old self but a bit older and a bit wiser. It's something between 'Be My Enemy' and 'Black Widow' for pace and mystery content. In my opinion, better than 'Black Widow' for me (which I enjoyed) and probably on a par with 'Be My Enemy' (which I liked a lot).

What does Avita Jay and Angus King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Some of the voices stray a bit but the core voices that they represent (Sam and Jack) feel really natural and Angus King is exactly how I pictured Parlabane sounding when I read the books. Good narration overall.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are a fair few heart in mouth moments and a good number of funny lines from Jack plus a guest appearance from Spammy.

    Any additional comments?

I think that this new series of Parlabane books really suits Brookmyre's style. Again, it is half way between the edgy comedy thrillers he used to write and the more straight mystery books from the Jasmine Sharpe series and for me this is a really winning combo. Sure, I'd like another 'Sacred Art of Stealing' but if I can't have that, this will still do me nicely. Job well done Mr Brookmyre.

    "Just brilliant!"

Jack Parlabane is my hero! Another fabulously crafted story of his exploits into the world of industrial espionage and hacking and a plot with lots of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Loved the dual story telling from the two key characters giving different perspectives as they work together to try and foil the plot. Cracking ending that left me wanting more Jack please!
