Publisher's Summary

When the Atomic Energy Commission puts the Vermilion One Mine on its shortlist of potential sites for storage of nuclear waste, a barrage of protest erupts in Tamarack County, Minnesota, and Cork O’Connor is hired to head security.

His first day on the job, Cork stumbles across a secret room with the remains of six murder victims inside. Five appear to be nearly half a century old - connected to what the media had dubbed “The Vanishings,” a series of unsolved disappearances in the summer of 1964, when Cork’s father was sheriff in Tamarack County. But the sixth has been dead less than a week. What’s worse, two of the bodies - including the most recent victim - were killed using Cork’s own gun, one handed down to him from his father.

As Cork searches for answers, he must dig into the darker passages of his family’s past. New threats surface, and unless Cork can unravel the tangled thread of clues quickly, more death is sure to come to Tamarack County.

    "Henry who?"

You can't change the way a character's name is pronounced 10 books into a series, Very distracting to hear Henry's name pronounced "wrong" each time

    "Another Great Cork O'Connor Mystery!!"

Great mystery and full of suspense. The historic information and the suspense keep you wanting for more. The characters are great. Have recommended Cork O'Connor books to nearly anyone who will listen. This is another of the great stories William Kent Krueger brings to life in the character of Cork O'Connor!

    "more than enough"

I've read every book in this series, and have now officially grown exhausted. The shape of the story is much like a Ross McDonald novel, with the sins of the past, long buried, surfacing to plague the present. But the story-in-a-story became a self-indulgent family history with a pop psychology float. The repression of memory is unbelievable and takes far to long to work through.

    "Good story, awful narrator"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The Cork O'connor series is a great series and I have enjoyed every one of them, but Buck Schirner is terrible as a narrator. Every character sounds like a old man. Every single character. He does women particularly badly but there are times when you can't tell who is talking because they all sound like cranky old men. And changing the pronunciation of Henry Meloux's name after having narrated at least two others in the series??? It is very disconcerting to have his name changed 10 books into the series. Schirner couldn't remember from one book to the next how to pronounce it? Is there no one editing or double-checking these? Cannot wait to get back to the original narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Buck Schirner’s performances?

Only because I don't want to miss any in the series. Otherwise, I would not listen to him ever again. If I had a choice of listening to another of his performances or choosing another book, I would choose another book. Whoever told him he would make a good narrator could not possibly have listened to anything he has done.

    Any additional comments?

A good narrator is nearly as important as a good story. It is so important that I will probably get the next in the series on my Kindle and not listen to any more in the series until the original narrator is back. Schirner is that awful to listen to.

    "Huh?"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The first books of the O'Connor series were good not so with this one

If you’ve listened to books by William Kent Krueger before, how does this one compare?

It seems that Mr Krueger was had some kind of Indian spiritual/mystical experience that is showing up in his recent book in this series. I'm losing interest fast.

Did Buck Schirner do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    No

Did Vermilion Drift inspire you to do anything?

    Yes, stop reading the series.

"One of the best in the series"
What made the experience of listening to Vermilion Drift the most enjoyable?

I thought that Vermillion Drift was the best so far. William Kent Krueger's story has Cork as a teenager, and then as the man he is - with the relationship with his father intertwined with an on-going investigation; really compelling.

    "This series keeps your interest"

August 15th I started my first book in the Cork O'Connor series. I am so happy that I gave this series a try. Just when you think that you have things figured out, here comes a curve ball or two or three... William Kent Krueger keeps you guessing. I hope that you give this series a try. Well worth the time and credits.
