Publisher's Summary

In Vanished, Abby has married the man of her dreams. He rescued her, and he's the father of her child. Everything should be perfect, but she begins to relive her nightmare from when she was taken...and one night she disappears, leaving her children alone in the dead of night, her husband on a military ship halfway around the world. But when Eric arrives home and the search begins, there are two disturbing questions: Was someone in the house? And how is it possible for Abby to simply vanish?

    "Couldn't stop listening"
Would you listen to Vanished again? Why?

No but only because I don't listen to books twice. I would, however, recommend it to a friend without hesitation.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eric. He struggled but he did his best to be a good husband, father and Captain

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Eric immediately left the ship in order to come home after Abby vanishes. It showed his love for his family.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The therapy session where Abby chooses to tell Eric the details of what happened to her. It was a tough thing but it seemed to turn their relationship around.

    Any additional comments?

I've never read/listened to anything from this author before and will definitely be looking up more of her books in the future!

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

    "Characters Who Lack Empathy"

This was an interesting premise & I thought I was going to enjoy this.

I did like that this attempted to tackle mental illness and also touched on domestic violence issues as well. They are 2 topics that are relevant right now.

Unfortunately, this legitimately upset me. Eric, the husband, is a selfish, rude asshole. Through the character, mental illness is treated as an inconvenience to others and something that Abby should feel sorry for. This simply reinforces the negative stigma that surrounds mental illness right now. This was written in a way that I felt I was supposed to feel sorry for Eric. I didn't. I hated him. Everything from his lack of empathy to the fact that he referred to them as "his children" rather than "their children" or "our children" EVERY time (sans 1 time at the end) makes him even worse. Mary Margaret was just as bad, yet, she's supposed to be seen as a savior of some sort. I love books with unlikeable characters. Characters who are flawed and real make for for some of the most interesting books, but I don't think these characters were meant to be unlikeable & their unlikeability didn't enhance or move along the story.

I thought the narrator captured Abby's voice perfectly.

    "Heartache and a halting delivery"
What does Caroline McLaughlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ms. McLaughlin's delivery was halting. I'm not sure if it was the editing or if she really speaks this way. The rhythm was choppy and hard to listen to. The story kept me interested, not the narration.

Did Vanished inspire you to do anything?

I was sad when Eric seemed so ready to move on so quickly. The author could have done more with the subject of PTSD. Although I was satisfied with the ending.

    "Vanished"

I realized this is the second in a series. I had to use my imagination to totally understand what was happening with Abby but once I got to the end when she and her husband were at the therapist did she open up and tell her husband the hell she went through when she was taken in the first book did I understand what she was going through. Now to get the rest in series and catch up on her life.
I received this free of charge for an honest review from the narrator or author.

    "Vanished : Saved ?"
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Emotional.

What does Caroline McLaughlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings the character of Abby to life. You feel Abby's pain from the beginning to the end.We know Abby has been traumatized by the past, but only by seeing it from her POV can we actually feel the pain.Abby is a strong character, but having to deal alone with flashes of her past, made her leave her family.I understood Eric's anger, frustration and fear. all of his emotions were also beautifully narrated.I loved him for learning from his mistakes and placing his family above all else.A well written book, where you can't find it in yourself to be angry at either Abby or Eric, but instead just root for their HEA
