Publisher's summary

Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles— the inspiration for the hit TNT series —continue their bestselling crime-solving streak.

A blessed event becomes a nightmare for pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli when she finds herself on the wrong side of a hostage crisis in this timely and relentless thriller.

A nameless, beautiful woman appears to be just another corpse in the morgue. An apparent suicide, she lies on a gurney, awaiting the dissecting scalpel of medical examiner Maura Isles. But when Maura unzips the body bag and looks down at the body, she gets the fright of her life. The corpse opens its eyes.

Very much alive, the woman is rushed to the hospital, where with shockingly cool precision, she murders a security guard and seizes hostages...one of them a pregnant patient, Jane Rizzoli.

Who is this violent, desperate soul, and what does she want? As the tense hours tick by, Maura joins forces with Jane's husband, FBI agent Gabriel Dean, to track down the mysterious killer's identity. When federal agents suddenly appear on the scene, Maura and Gabriel realize that they are dealing with a case that goes far deeper than just an ordinary hostage crisis.

Only Jane, trapped with the armed madwoman, holds the key to the mystery. And only she can solve it, if she survives the night.

"Drawing on current events, Gerritsen's latest novel is a tense, taut thriller that grabs readers from the get-go and never lets up." (Booklist)

worst nightmare

I thought this was a really good listen. At times I was very disturbed about the situations with the women, that I had to turn the player off and listen after a few min. For a woman its your worst nightmare for yourself as well as for your daughters. I really liked the story and it always kept my attention!!

Great but...

I loved this story. But I should have read it myself. Susan Denaker made this great mystery novel sound more like a dramatic reading of a Harlequin Romance. She nearly ruined the story. To make matters worse, her Boston accents were more like NYC and they were so horribly inconsistent that I had difficulty figuring out who was speaking.

Defiantly worth your time if you like police drama

I am new to Tess Gerritsen so going sole on the reviews of others I started with this title. Very good story line. The reader seems to slow a little in the middle but the story picks up and so does the readers excitement. I am looking for to the next selection from Gerritsen?s collection. It is defiantly worth your time if you like police type drama stuff.

Worthy Read

The storyline was engrossing as well as terrifying. It was one of those books I couldn't wait to get back to. The only downfall was the Bostonian accent sounded more like 'Jersey', but if you can look beyond that, it was a very worthy read.

Great entertainment

I've really come to love this series. Yes, its descriptions of the autopsy can be rather.. graphic.. but, the story is intelligent, the characters are realistic and developing and the writing is great!

In this installment, Rizzoli becomes a witness in the underground sex-slave trade from the Slovic countries. The injustices in that trade are portrayed in detail and not "pleasantly' .. but, it isn't lewd, just realistic. The story of the victim is very poignant.

I must admit, that I got a bit angry with Rizzoli for not putting her baby first.. but, that is me.. not her.

The narrator is good. I don't have any trouble distinguishing voices, and don't need to keep rewinding because I don't understand or miss something.

Yes, I'd recommend this book.. with a caution to those with sensitive souls.. You will hurt for and with the victims quite a bit.

A good Read

Vanish moves fast and kept me wanting to hear more. The bad guys were sufficiently evil and the good guys were fine. Not too much on character development, but Rizzoli is as good as usual.

Up to Par for Tess

This book brings across quite shockingly the underworld of the flesh trade that occurs in our world just beneath the veneer of our civilization. I enjoyed and the good read by the narrator. An exciting read.
