Publisher's summary

Coast Guard helicopter pilot Olivia Carver is on a very personal mission. Her twin brother, an undercover officer, was murdered by a drug cartel, and she won't stop until she finds the man responsible for his death.

In the course of her own investigation, Olivia meets informant Rico Cortes. He's mysterious and sexy, and despite her reservations, the two share a night of passion. But Rico turns out to be more than a one-night stand. He's a DEA agent, deep undercover in Miami's drug world, and possibly the one man who can help Olivia find the justice she seeks.

When Rico realizes his cover is blown, he isn't sure whether it was someone in the cartel or an inside agent. Olivia is the only one he can trust, and together they venture on a dangerous, rogue mission to infiltrate a drug lord's inner circle... with Olivia as bait.

Surprised

Due to previous reviews I wasn't expecting much from this book but actually I liked it. I enjoy a story with a strong woman character and Olivia is a fantastic character. She's very smart and she is a fighter. She set her goals and she achieved them. Also there's action, suspense, and danger involved. Also lets not forget the sexual situations. Thrown together this was in all very pleasing to me.

I'm not the type of listener that's going to over analyze a fictional book. I just listen and either I like it or I don't. In my opinion this would be worth a credit but I got it on sale which is better.

Great Story

This was one fantastic read! Why? First off the narrator was wonderful. Done very well.
The heroine in this story, Olivia was true to form. Strong, determined and fearless, she went to the wall and back. Rico, a strong alpha male, respected her and they worked well together. I'm sure at times he was afraid for her because she was so determined to get the guys who had killed her brother. The story had lot of action, and adventure. I truly enjoyed it and will listen to it again.

Could not finish.

I didn’t care enough about the characters. I wasn’t curious.

The beginning had good action with Olivia as a coast guard helicopter pilot. She meets Rico and thinks he’s working for a drug cartel but later learns he’s an undercover DEA agent. They decide to do some undercover work on their own. I was past the halfway point in the book and they were still talking, planning, gathering supplies, and having sex. I was impatient for them to get started with the bad guys. So I skipped ahead to a scene where Olivia was undercover talking to a bad guy, and I realized I had no interest in continuing. So I skipped to the end, read the last half hour and was glad to be done.

The narrator Gabra Zackman had a pleasant voice, but she did not interpret well. One line was “Yes Maam he snapped.” The narrator read it in a calm manner. Also, she used a weird voice for some of the men.

Genre: romantic suspense.

Good story, good narrator

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There's lots of action, good romance, interesting characters. If I had the slightest criticism it would be that in parts it reminded me of an episide of the old Miami Vice TV shows but that didn't really detract from the overall enjoyment.

I really like the narrator too. She had good voice differentiation and a non-intrusive style that kept up with pace of the action.

If you are looking for a sweet, cozy romance this one probably isn't for you. It's fairly gritty and somewhat violent (for a romance, anyway), but if you like military-flavoured romance and a kick-butt female protagonist who can more than hold her own, then you'll enjoy this book as much as I did.

I would definitely buy another book by this author and this narrator.

I'm sorry that I didn't finish this one...

This book made me feel like a female wrote it trying to come off as a male. How many references to "dick" can you take in one book? I love saucy romance novels, but I didn't make it to the end on this one, as much as I tried. Maybe things would have changed, but I was mega disappointed and not at all engaged.

Too Much Smut

This book should be located in the porn category. If you take all the smut out there was a fair story but the trash was very distracting (having to fast-forward over and over).

There's a difference between romance and smut/porn and the writers and editors should be aware of the difference. This author is now on my "do not buy/listen" list.

Yuch

What didn’t you like about Gabra Zackman’s performance?

The main charactor is a Coast Guard helicopter pilot. I realize the word helo (short for helicopter) can be pronounced "hel-lo" (per the dictionary), but in my aviation career I have never heard it pronounced this way. Any helo pilot will tell you that they fly "hee-loh"s not "hel-lo"s. Minor point, but it lends to credibility.

Any additional comments?

I guess I should have known from the cover art that this is a "harlequin romance" novel and not serious crime fiction.

Enter Ms GI Jane in action

Would you listen to Under Fire again? Why?

great to listen a second time when power walking...makes to you feel like you can Do It!
A great strong female lead.

What other book might you compare Under Fire to and why?

Dying to Please, by Linda Howard. Same battle training for our lady in action.

Have you listened to any of Gabra Zackman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listen to about 10 stories read by Ms Zackman & her other reader name,Isabelle Gorden. She can make an average story come to life. Very rich male voice, sexy. Good dialog in this story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when young boy is eating with our heros

Any additional comments?

Love to hear more stories by Rita Henuber and read by Ms Zackman

A legit strong female lead

Olivia was a proper strong female lead. She was well trained, and I appreciate that unlike other romance + action books, we're not just told she's strong, but there are so many scenes with her kicking butt. And the fight scenes are nice and detailed, head butting, nose breaking, the works.
My only qualm is that the romance bit in the middle was longer than necessary and just way overdone. I understand though that for the relationship and the mission to be convincing, the characters are expected to spend enough time together to build some trust. I just feel that time could have been spent doing parts of the mission, and not just indoors planning and lusting after each other.
